EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ANDREW GILLUM -- THE BERNIE-BACKED PROGRESSIVE WHO JUST WON

IN FLORIDA

A progressive Democratic candidate backed by Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer and George Soros won a shock victory in Florida’s Democratic primary Tuesday — setting up a showdown against a Trump-backed Republican for governor of the key swing state.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum lagged in fourth place in the Real Clear Politics polling average ahead of the vote. With five days to go, Gillum was six points behind former Rep. Gwen Graham — daughter of former governor and former Sen. Bob Graham — the favorite for the nomination.

DeSantis, also 39, defeated Adam Putnam, who had entered the race as the establishment favorite and who raised significantly more money than his rival. However, the president’s endorsement likely pushed DeSantis over the line, with Trump promoting the Republican’s political career as far back as 2012. In the last year, he has tweeted his support for the candidate numerous times.

(snip)

DeSantis has done his best to keep Trump onside, including releasing an ad in which he teaches his children how to build a wall and shows him reading Trump’s ghostwritten book “The Art of the Deal” to his young son.

Dropped in a district. Andrew GIllum is a Democrat, has been for years and has political experience. He is the mayor of Tallahassee. It may have been hard for him to beat a more moderate Republican but I think he stands a good chance to win against the demented trumper.
If you look at the returns, he over performed well beyond his power base near Tallahassee. He took Broward county and pretty much beat the other candidates in their own backyard. This tells me he is tapping into an electorate that the other dems did not touch. That may be key for no ember. If he can successfully withstand the onslaught of attacks that will come from the RW (hopefully he is not implicated in the city hall scandal ) he can win and will make a great governor.

This man will get out the vote in November in all Florida counties. Bill Nelson should be happy about this. He needs every Millennial vote and every minority vote.

at the time the polls had Gillum trailing in third or fourth place.

"It's no secret we haven't won the money war," he said. "It's prohibited us from getting on their TV screens…It's a way to get my candidacy into the mix and the news," especially with people who might still be unaware he is a candidate.

Gillum added Sanders' camp reached out to him, after he completed a questionnaire for Our Revolution and received the endorsement of the group. We "got outreach from Sen. Sanders' office… we didn't actually reach out to them, they reached out to us."

After meeting with some of his advisors, he had a phone call with Sanders, and two weeks after that, Sanders called back: "I'd like to help."

Having a high-profile surrogate come to the state like this and spend a day "campaigning across the (Interstate-4) corridor with me… the timing couldn't be any better," he said.

As they say timing is everything.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders endorsed Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum on Wednesday as his pick for Florida governor.

The 2016 candidate for president and progressive Democrat gave his endorsement of Gillum on Twitter. He’s the most prominent political name yet to pick Gillum in the run-up to the Aug. 28 primary.

“I’m proud to endorse Tallahassee Mayor @andrewgillum in his race for governor of Florida,” Sander’s confirmed Twitter account posted.

“It’s an honor to have Senator Bernie Sanders’ endorsement in this campaign,” Gillum responded in a statement. “He has been an unapologetic fighter for everyday working people standing up to the special interests. From Medicare-for-All, to a $15 minimum wage, his ideas and platform have become the Democratic Party’s north star on economic justice for those who need it most.”

...with their very aggressive young-voter registration campaigns. They went all over the U.S., but it appeared they especially hustled in their home state of Florida.

In any case, many factors at the grassroots level contributed to the win; it wasn't all about Gillum receiving an 11th hour Bernie Seal of Approval.

Imagine ... Gillum in FL and Stacey Abrams in GA. Incredible!

Love this quote from Gillum last night:

“I believe what is going to deliver us to victory in November is the fact that there are everyday hard working people who believe that they deserve a voice in our government too,” Gillum told supporters following the win.

I think he is right. Democratic voters in both FL and GA are excited and engaged. And that bodes well for November.

He is running on a very progressive platform that includes:

A hike the state’s corporate tax rate to fund education.

Raising the state’s minimum wage to $15.

A Medicare-for-all single-payer health care system nationally.

The abolition of ICE following the family separation crisis.

Legalizing marijuana.

This should be a fascinating G.E.

If Andrew Gillum is going to take the state of Florida, he needs more backers than just Bernie Sanders. He needs the entire Democratic Party behind him. This is Do Or Die time, guys! Let's show up for Gillum.
