Ignoring Washington's warnings, troops have been moving a disputed boundary deeper into Georgia, a former Soviet republic that's now a staunch U.S. ally.
A decade after war, Putin-backed 'borderization' costs Georgia land

Some U.S. officials do care, though. Many are alarmed that Russia appears to be eating away at an American ally that has sent around 870 troops to Afghanistan, the most per capita of any country.
Just this week, some 1,170 American service members joined 1,300 Georgian troops for the fourth year of Noble Partner, a joint military exercise that runs until the middle of August.
Georgia is wedged between the Middle East, Russia, Iran, and Turkey, and has become an important corridor for oil pumped from the Caspian Sea. Its geopolitical significance is evidenced by the $100 million the U.S. gives Georgia in annual assistance intended to boost American business, foster democracy and help edge the country's military toward NATO membership.
"The United States support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity is unwavering," said Elizabeth Rood, chargé d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.
"We strongly support Georgia in calling out Russia and the de facto separatist regimes on human rights abuses in the occupied territories," she added, "and on the continued violation of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.".................

(35,320 posts)had mixed reviews here. I think I showed up after the war was over and just caught the echoes.
But the dominant view at the time was, "Maybe Russia's not all bad" and "nobody wants their kid to die for a Georgian." That changed, for some people, when it was pointed out that this "Georgia" wasn't the Southern US state, but only for some people.
At the time, polls on how popular Russia was showed (D) outstripping (R) support by a reasonable margin. And there was fear, terror, umbrage, that Bush II might do something bad. But he imposed multilateral sanctions (yeah! Sanctions!!!) and a few years later the sanctions were lifted because of the need for good will and being nice to Russia. Europe first, then the US.
It should be obvious that unless the US is willing to actually send troops and have Americans die, or inundate Georgia with lethal weapons and massive air support, there's nothing really great that the US can do except say, "Let's fight some more and criticize people over things we can't fix but which make really good talking points!"
That's what's happened between the US/NATO and Russia over a number of skirmishes. It's why there was every confidence that Crimea would pass with a wrist slap followed by a handshake, and then the Donbas. Note that while the wrist's still being slapped, in many ways the handshake's ongoing with Europe.
What could be done would be to send some troops to the border--to stake out the border, put up monitoring stations, and put US or maybe NATO-country troops in harm's way. Then, if they stretch the border they either kill, capture a NATO soldier, or get killed or captured by a NATO soldier. Otherwise it's likely local thugs favored by the Great Putin on the 7 Hills just showing how much better they are because of their ethnicity and how they can be thuggish towards others. It's the Soviet way; Soviet troops, for instance, were praised in the media but the locals never much liked them because they were pretty much above the law. Much worse than US troops in Okinawa.

(58,785 posts)People go to bed at night in their own country and wake up to find they're now in "Russia."
Trump will do nothing real, of course. He might fire a tweet.
