In Annapolis and America, words are a deadly business (Archibald/al.com)

This is an opinion column.

Words are everything. Particularly in my business.

But some days, like today, the words are harder to choose.

Because words, like facts, have come to mean different things to different people. They are charged and loaded and other adjectives we typically reserve for weapons. I don't want them to miss their mark, or go off accidentally.

Because what happened in Annapolis Thursday - with real weapons -- hits way too close to home. Five people are dead in a newsroom. Five families who tried not to think about the threats and escalating rhetoric that has become commonplace in the news business are left to grieve and ask why. Why them? Just because they went to work on a day another man decided to go to war?

The words are hiding now.
