How (the European) Trump won a second term (Politico.eu)

He’s a septuagenarian who dislikes Muslims, the media and migrants and loves Vladimir Putin. He’s detested by urban dwellers and liberal elites who see him as a national embarrassment and a menace to values they hold dear.

And he’s just won his second term as president.

The reelection of Europe’s “Trumpiest president” shows the Continent’s populist tide isn’t receding.

Czech President Miloš Zeman beat political novice Jiří Drahoš Friday and Saturday in a contest that was characterized by smears of Zeman’s opponent and allegations of covert Russian funding for the incumbent’s campaign.

The 73-year-old’s politics has invited obvious comparisons with his U.S. counterpart, although he has been on the international political scene far longer. After Trump’s election, he was an early invitee to the White House, being the only European head of state to back Trump as a candidate. “There are many politicians who admired Trump after the elections, when courage is cheap,” Zeman said last year.

To hear some of the Czech citizens praising Putin and being anti-EU and Pro-Russia is bizarre....

On a recent visit this last year to Prague, I was shocked when I heard a friend living there doing just that. When I had to remind her of the history of her Nation and the Soviets, it was as if it didn't matter. When she started talking about Black men from Africa being dangerous and just wanting to come and rape their women there, I was speechless. She was angry about the EU. Felt Putin was an example of a great leader. Started talking Anti-US, Anti-Nato and saying no way should the Czech Republic be cooperating anymore with them. We were at a Cafe earlier that day and got off at a subway stop and were walking after and I pointed at a statue and asked her if she knew who it was. As we stood beneath the bronze statue of Woodrow Wilson, she said she had no idea of who he was. Really? You have no idea of Woodrow Wilson is - I asked her. She really didn't. I reminded her she needs to study up on the founding of Czechoslovakia and that the US had only ever been a friend to the Czech. I also told her she might want to study what the Soviets did to her Nation, economically and socially and even visit the Museum of Communism and see what kind of things happened under Soviet/Russian influence over her Nation. And that Zeman was dangerous and its really amazing to see that just like Trump was able to fool those in our country, that he was doing the same to her people.

anyone much older than their 40's was probably educated before the collapse of Communism, and even someone in their 30's might not have learned much of their own (truthful) history in school.

An American watching Rick Steves' travel shows might be more aware of the CR's Communist history than that.
