Inside Mar-a-Lago for 48 hours critical to the Russia investigation

By Jeff Zeleny and Kevin Liptak, CNN

Updated 5:53 PM ET, Fri December 8, 2017

Correspondent Jim Sciutto explores "The Mystery of Michael Flynn" in Friday's CNN Special Report at 10 p.m. ET.

Washington (CNN)The answer to one of the most critical questions at the heart of the Russia investigation may well lie in the grand hallways of Mar-a-Lago.

Did President Donald Trump know Michael Flynn talked about sanctions during his conversations a year ago with the former Russian ambassador? Or did the President's small circle of advisers keep it from him?

A look back at a pivotal 48-hour period -- inside the President's Palm Beach estate -- offers a fresh window into some of the early thinking and actions of the new Trump team, the consequences of which are now front-and-center in the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

When Trump strode into Mar-a-Lago's Grand Ballroom last December 29, neither he nor his aides could imagine that day would come to haunt his presidency. But the decisions made during that period, as the President basked in the comfort of his retreat, still resonate a year later.

It's now clear that Flynn's lies to the FBI were rooted in his telephone call that day to the former Russian ambassador and his subsequent call to Trump advisers at Mar-a-Lago.

The answers may ultimately come from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, but the questions begin during that critical period in Florida.

Here's a look back at what is known -- and what's still to be determined -- about what transpired Mar-a-Lago on December 28 and 29 last year:

Trump told Flynn to lie to the FBI too.

I know that Trump was in on it because when Flynn was fired they said it was for lying to Pence. They didn't say anything about Flynn lying to Trump. So Flynn didn't lie to Trump.

They also let Flynn hang on after they were informed of Flynn's misdeeds. That's consistent with Flynn not being fired because he was only doing what he was told to do.

We know that ending sanctions was a top priority for Trump from day one. So he must have talked to Flynn about it. All those people guiding Flynn from Mar-a-Lago couldn't have been acting on their own without Trump's blessing.

Before the FBI came to interview Flynn Flynn's phone calls were big news. Two days before the FBI interview the Wall Street Journal reported that a counter-intelligence investigation was opened up for Flynn's calls. That must have scared Flynn and the rest of the White House shitless. There's no way Trump wouldn't have discussed it with Flynn.

That's when Trump must have told Flynn to lie to investigators.

Its said that when a charge is filed in a plea deal the charge should be related to the offense by the higher up who is the target prosecutors are making the deal to get. Lying to the FBI is related to being told to lie to the FBI. Flynn made a statement on the day his guilty plea was announced. In the statement, Flynn said he never committed treason. That makes it unlikely that Flynn is going to reveal any collusion with Russia. So confessing to being told to lie by Trump is a more likely reason for the deal.

I don't know which crime telling a subordinate to lie to the FBI is, but it must be against the law. Telling Flynn to lie would also put Trump's request to Comey to lay off Flynn in a new light. If its true then Trump was trying to save his own ass. That looks a lot worse than trying to save Flynn. It strengthens an obstruction case.

If Trump told Flynn to lie that is an impeachable offense.

It angers me that almost no one in the media is working this angle.

The Re-thug platform was changed at the behest of Team tr-dump to go soft on Putin and Russia. That was back in July of 2016.
