Tommy Battle responds to pushback at home for endorsing Roy Moore (al.com)

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle's run for governor is largely based on spreading statewide the ant hill of economic activity he's built in the Rocket City.

But Battle may have kicked that ant hill instead by endorsing Roy Moore for the U.S. Senate this month. Judging from social media and talk in Huntsville, some of his likely voters are swarming mad.

More than 130 comments on Battle's campaign Facebook page expressed shock, disappointment, and anger at the endorsement. Several hundred more comments made the same points on Reckon from AL.com's Facebook page.

Reckon political columnist Kyle Whitmire asked Battle in an Oct. 20 interview if he would endorse Moore. "I'm a Republican," Battle answered. "I'll end up endorsing Roy Moore for the Senate because, as Republicans, we back the Republican ticket."

But Moore has become a political lightning rod even within his own party because of his hard line and Biblical stances on issues such as gay marriage, abortion and immigration.

Encouraging to see the remarks quoted -- lots of people who can't back Battle if Battle back Moore.

I haven't dared look at the comments. It's just not worth the risk.
