Donald Trump usually trusts his instincts, and that's a problem - By Scot Lehigh
If ever there was an apt two-sentence encapsulation of the problems with Donald Trump and his presidency, Trump himself offered it Monday as he set up his flip-flop on Afghanistan.
My original instinct was to pull out, he said. And historically, I like following my instincts.
Given the seriousness of the Afghanistan situation, however, Trump did something he seldom does. I studied Afghanistan in great detail and from every conceivable angle. And so he arrived back more or less at Barack Obamas strategy of a reluctant acquiescence to a longer stay.
Too often, this president simply acts on instinct. Heres the problem with Trump trusting his gut: Ample though that source of counsel appears to be, this president is so poorly informed, has such a short attention span, so underestimates policy complexities, and so overestimates his own abilities that he repeatedly finds his promises and proclamations ripped apart by reality.
