Charlottesville (Va.) braces for an invasion of the knuckle-draggers

This was published in the very right wing (op-eds anyway) Richmond Times-Dispatch

It’s not clear what sin Charlottesville committed that has led to the nearly biblical plague of Klansmen, alt-righters and other knuckle-draggers descending on the bucolic little burg. Some of the other cities that have debated the removal of Confederate statues have been spared such visitations.

Yet so far this year Charlottesville has been visited by Republican hellion Corey Stewart (and counterprotesters) in February and the KKK (and counterprotesters) in early July. In August, it can expect events by Unite the Right, which aims to “stand up for white people,” and 1Team-1Fight, which doesn’t agree with Unite the Right’s racial politics but does want to bring together — well, something or other. We’re not fully conversant with the finer doctrinal points of the two groups’ weltanschauungs, and we rather like it that way.

It seems pointless to appeal to the better nature of white supremacists, so we’ll limit our appeal to those who might turn out against them: While voicing opposition to bigotry is commendable, it’s worth remembering that the vast majority of the public already agrees with you, and in any event you aren’t going to change the other side’s mind. Nothing will be gained by screaming at each other — or worse. As a fellow once said, don’t get into a fight with a pig — you get dirty, and the pig likes it.

In short, someone has to be the better person in situations such as these. It won’t be the bigots. Which means it has to be you.

So it never dawned on me, all on my own. And I still don't get it.

Let them protest each other. They want the conflict, they want to yell their hate at others who don't believe as they do. They want to play the victim. Take it all away from them by walking away laughing!

Don't show up to counter protest. Businesses that can close should do so. People should stay home. Close the curtains, turn on the air conditioner, sit down and wait them out. The press should ignore them, too.

maybe it's the fact that UVA is there. Apparently higher education is viewed with disdain in right wing circles

with their little memes and code words and such. Everywhere else that are doing this tend to be in the Deep South so there's no real juxtaposition if that's the right word.

I don't really get it either.

Staying at home and allowing these loudmouths to drown out our voices is how these t RUMP idiots got where they are at now...no more...our voices/letters/protests/votes/actions collectively together will easily overwhelm these loudmouths. They don't speak for me.
