Liberals can win again if they stop being so annoying and fix their 'hamburger problem'
"I've been haunted by a claim my KCRW colleague Rich Lowry made on our radio show a few weeks ago: Democrats keep coming up short in elections because they won't give any ground on "cultural issues" to win back the working-class voters they've alienated over the past decades.
On one hand, it's obviously true that Democrats suffer from a cultural disconnect from non-college-educated voters who have abandoned the party in droves. Democrats believe their economic agenda should appeal to people with lower incomes, yet income has become a poor predictor of partisan alignment; Democrats' substantial inroads with upscale suburban voters have been more than offset by the loss of voters down the income spectrum, most of whom did not finish college.
Most of the discussion of this trend has focused on non-college-educated white voters, who have swung heavily toward Republicans; but Democrats should also be worried about their disconnect with non-college-educated nonwhite voters, whose turnout declined precipitously in 2016.
On the other hand, when you look at the polling on specific "cultural issues," Democrats usually have the edge. "

(9,350 posts)Democrats do not really need to change on cultural issues. Unless it can be proven that the reduction in minority voters in 2016 was due to cultural issues Democrats do not need to change on cultural issues. It is very likely that the Democrats actually need to focus more on their base. One thing Democrats can say Donald Trump did right was going after his base and not wasting time trying to get some Democrats to come to his side. Hillary Clinton likely spent far too much time trying to convince supposedly moderate to vote for her. She should have spent more money and time trying to get her base to go to the polls.
In addition, voter suppression need to be examined. How many people who would have voted for Hillary Clinton were prevented from voting due to voter suppression. Why is it that Exit Polls in a number of states showed Hillary Clinton winning those states only to lose those states? Did people really have to lie about voting for Hillary Clinton after they had already voted?
I think it is very possible that Hillary Clinton would have won the 2016 election if not for voter suppression. It is possible that she would have won most of the Democratic stronghold and won in a few more purple states. In many instances Trump margin of victory was much less than the number of people who were supposedly prevented from voting due to strict voting laws. It is very possible that Hillary Clinton would have won many of the states that she lost by 50,000-100,000+ votes if not for voter suppression.
In addition, the Republican Party has lost the popular vote in the six of the last seven elections. If the Republican Party is having a hard time winning the popular vote I think it is the Republican Party that has the problem and not the Democratic Party.

(460 posts)The reason why boomer whites hate Democrats has nothing to do with anything reasonable. It has everything to do with their deep angry opposition to losing their white privilege. Even for older whites who aren't actively attacking blacks, they've built up this resentment, pretending to themselves that the "government" helps everyone but them.
You're not going to make significant inroads with these people by attacking nonexistent problems like hamburger shaming.

The Hillary for prison signs have been replaced with the We Support the Badge sign. Which always say to me.. misogynist racists live here.
