Twenty-two senators wrote a letter to the president when he was said to be on the fence about backing out. They received more than $10m from oil, gas and coal companies the past three election cycles.

1. In this case I think "big oil darlings" is synoymous with

"big oil whores". Some members really seem to be for hire to the highest bidder and vote appropriately for their employers. The word employers not to be confused with their constituents whom elected them to represent their best interests. They, unfortunately, are not given any consideration. It has become, for many, a one track in route pursuit of money.
