Actions warrant general strike

... these protests are too easily ignored and forgotten by those who wish to ignore and forget them. The barriers go up, the march takes place, the barriers come down. Everyone goes home happier.
One reason that Saturdays protests were so effective was that, while peaceful, they were disruptive. Terminal Four was closed, incoming flights were delayed. One traveller wrote, on Twitter, that his fellow passengers applauded when their pilot announced the reason why their plane would be landing an hour behind schedule ...
... what we need is a nonviolent national general strike of the kind that has been more common in Europe than here. Lets designate a day on which no one (that is, anyone who can do so without being fired) goes to work, a day when no one shops or spends money, a day on which we truly make our economic and political power felt, a day when we make it clear: how many of us there are, how strong and committed we are, how much we can accomplish ...

(6,143 posts)They got fully 5% their population in the streets for multiple weekends.
Can we get 16 million nationwide? If trump continues this trajectory I think we may see it before summer.

(50,254 posts)I'm retired, so technically I don't have a job to walk off of, but I'll be there on the picket lines.
And in the streets.

(11,481 posts)Is that the date of the GS that toppled the Tsar in 1917? Seems like it was in February too.

(722 posts)It was the day before International Women's Day.
Feb 17 is being touted because it's the Friday before Presidents' Day.

(11,481 posts)I'm embarrassed that I didn't know that as much Russian history as I've studied. I don't have a real affinity for dates though. The only reason I remember the date of the Bolshevik revolution is because it's my birthday. And Trotsky's birthday too.

(11,481 posts)and boycott. No economic activity on that day. That's not enough, we need it to be an indefinite GS, but I'm not sure that the consciousness of the American worker is ready for an indefinite General Strike. Yet. Also occupations seem to be the tactic that has worked the best over the last decade of protest, so those should be considered for people who are more militant and are prepared to be arrested.
TBH, until this resistance to the Trump agenda begins to affect the general economy, it won't be very effective. The owners in society will let you march, demonstrate, chant, and speechify all day long without paying a BIT of attention to you. But if you touch their wallets (profits), THEN you get their attention.
