. . .

Fourteen-year-old Leilani Thomas beat San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to the punch by 7 years, when, as a second-grader in Utah, she began sitting out the Pledge of Allegiance. Said Leilani, who is one of the last remaining descendants of the Pomo people, an indigenous group native to Northern California:

"I feel like it's a lie to me in, like, what they did to my people," she told a local Utah television station. "Not only here, but around the country. It's still going on to this day."

For years, her daily, personal, silent protest was unremarkable, she said. "Most of my teachers, they respected my decision and my right and belief. So they never said anything about it," she told CNN Friday.

Until September 9th, when Thomas received some troubling news: her teacher lowered her grade in class for failing to participate.

Your grades were earned on testing your knowledge.
Behavior was another issue to be dealt with punishment.
But I know of a first hand case, where a teacher quit after she refused to change a grade to a football player. He got a 69 on his semester test. The principal, parents all begged for the teacher to give extra credit to change the grade. She refused. I had the student in my class, he was so disrespectful, disruptive, just a plain pain in the butt bully. All the teachers supported her. She quit her job and went to work at another school district.
