Spreading hope now, not hate

... “I got involved in the white supremacist movement during one of my summer visits with my dad in Mississippi,” he said. “I got involved in the Ku Klux Klan.

“Later, I found out why I got involved because I always wondered if I really believed all of this stuff, especially since I was raised by a black lady before we came to Huntsville. Some people would call her a nanny, but I call her my godmother because she was like a second mom to me.

“I was such a troubled kid that I was looking for something in my life to fill a void,” Shepherd added. “The white supremacists and the Ku Klux Klan were there. They were like street gangs are today. All of these groups offer kids a family, a belonging.”

By promoting hatred and recruiting new members, Shepherd worked his way up the ranks of the KKK. Ultimately, he was named Grand Dragon of Tennessee’s KKK contingent. He was also working as a funeral home director and embalmer in a Nashville funeral home ...
