Refuge takeover a casual topic at Harney County branding

DREWSEY – ... They wonder why some Americans seem so angry at cattlemen who feed them. They wonder about stories they've heard around the area that the FBI agents in town for the occupation strong-armed local ranchers. They want to know more about claims on social media that Bundy – facing federal charges in two states – was handcuffed to a table for 23 hours and that his legal papers were deliberately mislaid.

These aren't table pounders. They spoke deliberately, respectfully. They are genuinely curious and interested. And worried about the future of ranching. They are alarmed by talk of creating a national monument a bit to the east in the Owyhee Canyonlands, a step they see as cutting off yet more grazing land and forcing more ranchers to slim their operations.

But on a mild day in the high desert, such talk was sporadic. Mostly, this was a day about getting the job done and getting to that rangeland lunch buffet ...
