German Shepherd Helps Rescue Children From Burning Home

LONGWOOD, Fla. (WFLA/AP) — Authorities in central Florida say a German shepherd helped firefighters locate the two young children of his owners in heavy smoke as a blaze destroyed their home.

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office says that the dog named Maxx helped firefighters find the 4-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl Monday night in their home in the Orlando suburb, Longwood.

“Maxx, the family dog, is credited with assisting firefighters through the heavy smoke to the location of each of the two children,” according to a GoFundMe page set up for the family.

Moments earlier, neighbors who saw the fire spreading called 911, broke windows and helped evacuate the children’s mother, Margo Feaser.

Firefighters then were able to rescue Feaser’s husband, as well as the two children with Maxx’s help.

Never though I would want a GSD but we lucked into this female and she is the most protective and gentle dog I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She is fluent in English so we switched to broken Spanish then to spelling certain words. She is smart, good-natured, playful and joyously happy. This little grandchild came to visit and our girl took to her immediately and she became part of her 'flock'. Thanks for sharing the story.

Dogs are the very best.

I have heard so many stories like this where a dog saves people's lives. We need to be better to dogs. We need to have a society that is better to people too.

What a great story.

My German Shepherd was the most loyal, alert and intelligent dog. He had a sixth sense that sometimes took me off guard wondering what it was he was concerned about.
