Hillary Is Being Misleading About Her Role in the Honduras Coup
The U.S., under Clinton's leadership, helped overthrow Honduras' elected government. Today the country is in chaos.

Hillary Clinton may have foreign policy experience, but it is experience comprised of disaster after disaster.
In an interview with the New York Daily News, journalist Juan González dug a skeleton out of Clintons closet: He asked the presidential candidate about her role in the coup in Honduras.
In 2009, the Honduran military overthrew the democratically elected government of President Manuel Zelaya. The populist left-wing leader was woken up in the middle of the night, kidnapped and whisked away from his own country.
The international community immediately condemned the coup. The U.S. response was quite different. The Obama administration, and particularly the State Department under the leadership of Hillary Clinton, defended the coup.

(1,325 posts)When has America ever supported democracy in Latin America??? Only when some murderous right-wing, pro-business oligarch wins a phony election. Remember when we immediately supported the coup against Chavez in Venezuela? Unfortunately for our State Dept. Chavez had other plans. War is a racket and our troops are nothing but errand boys for Wall Street.

It takes real determination for propagandists to refuse to acknowledge history.

(7,476 posts)Hillary got involved. She had no part in it. She did work with the new rulers to have an election. For this, her enemies claim she helped the coup or even prevented the previous president from returning. That's nonsense. There was no way the previous president was going to return. He was voted out by the legislature in which his own party had a majority. The election didn't turn out well, but Hillary's approach was a reasonable response to a bad situation.
This narrative also omits that the previous president disobeyed a court order and was ordered arrested by the court. It wasn't just a rogue act by the military. Laws were broken but other parts of the coup were constitutional. Hillary said the coup was both, which is historically accurate.
