Robert Reich: Here’s why mainstream media marginalizes Bernie Sanders

Robert Reich, AlterNet

01 Apr 2016

“Bernie did well last weekend but he can’t possibly win the nomination,” a friend told me for what seemed like the thousandth time, attaching an article from the Washington Post that shows how far behind Bernie remains in delegates.

Wait a minute. Last Tuesday, Sanders won 78 percent of the vote in Idaho and 79 percent in Utah. This past Saturday, he took 82 percent of the vote in Alaska, 73 percent in Washington, and 70 percent in Hawaii.

In fact, since mid-March, Bernie has won six out of the seven Democratic primary contests with an average margin of victory of 40 points. Those victories have given him roughly a one hundred additional pledged delegates.

As of now, Hillary Clinton has 54.9 percent of the pledged delegates to Bernie Sanders’s 45.1 percent. That’s still a sizable gap – but it doesn’t make Bernie Sanders’s candidacy an impossibility.

Moreover, there are 22 states to go with nearly 45 percent of pledged delegates still up for grabs – and Sanders has positive momentum in almost all of them.

and CNN. Nobody would know who the heck Bernie is, and the coronation would have been just a formality.

It must really piss them off.

some time now. Al Jazeera America started almost every evening news cast last week with David Shuster covering Bernie in a POSITIVE light (and at the Brooklyn rally). I wish there was some way to keep them on the air--they are going away at the end of April.

If you look at the AP counts, a bunch of the 101 delegates seem not to be taken into account. In that case, Bernie is closer than their total count of real delegates shows.

CNN has the correct/updated count (though they, too, include the distorted superdelegates as default total). But if you look at Google's prominent display of delegates (just type in "primaries"...which I guess takes from the AP) it's still at the diminished count. Corrected counts would close the pledged delegate gap much closer to 200, which corrects the impression/perception to a much tighter race than is being report.

Thanks for the link! There still seem to be some missing, however, CNN has bernie 1020
hillary 1259 as totals pledged, but for washington Bernie 65 and Hillary 19. That leaves 101-(65+19) = 17 in the ether.

I don't know if the 1020 vs 1259 includes the missing delegates or not.

Anyway, the gap is 239 or less.
