Why I left the Republican Party (LTTE | Chicago Trib)

For most of my adult life I voted Republican ...
I have watched a party of which I was very proud become one of vitriol and obstruction, pandering to everything ugly: racism, xenophobia, selfishness and, especially, fear of everything even our own government. And I left it.
I left the racists who fly the Confederate flag, the gun lovers who are so afraid of the government that they feel the need to carry guns to protect themselves from it, the birthers who could not seem to grasp reality, the elderly who rail against government spending all the while happily banking their Social Security checks ...
I left a party full of idiots who rail against their government, their terrible government, that has built a country that is a beacon to the rest of the world. They rail against the different levels of government that clean their streets, pick up their garbage, keep them safe, build bridges and roads, provide us with clean air and sanitary food, see that we have safe buildings to live in, educate our children, support our elderly, provide decent medical care, make sure mail is delivered, and protect us from terrorists at the same time as reaching out in a humane way to comfort those pitiful people who are the victims of a bloody Middle East ...
