Confederate flag supporters need history lesson (OH LTTE)

... some area residents .. have not yet received the news that Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant .... they also might be unaware that Ohio supported the Union in that conflict, that 35,475 Ohioans gave their lives to suppress the Southern rebellion .... when Confederate cavalry raider John Hunt Morgan invaded Ohio from June 11 to July 26, 1863, he was disappointed to find many angry Buckeyes armed with rifles and shotguns, ready to repel any efforts to bring the war to the North ...

... The South seceded from the Union because they didn't want Washington telling them what to do in the matter of slavery ... Being "Good Ole Rebels", southerners didn't like paying "Yankee" taxes. They didn't like paying taxes to Jeff Davis either ... Their money was worthless as soon as it was printed; their postal-system was ineffective, their railroads and infrastructure was substandard ... Poor dirt farmers in the South .. were conned into becoming cannon-fodder in support of lazy plantation owners ...

... The victory of the Union signaled the dawn of organized labor. Having secured liberty for thousands of slaves, returning veterans began to be concerned about providing fair, living wages that supported their families. That struggle continues today. It's something for all workers to think about this Labor Day as they enjoy the holiday ...
