To those who argue that the Confederate Flag is a symbol of regional pride, I say, what good is such a symbol if it alienates half the people in that region? ...
A Confederate flag on government property is an affront to the fundamental principle of our way of life, which provides for government of the people, by the people, and for the people all its people, not just white people ...
... when that flag flies over government buildings, the black Southerner feels keenly a message that white Southerners can blithely ignore: that power has traditionally been exercised by whites over blacks as a pure form of oppression and utter negation of their selfhood ...
If you decide to keep the flag flying in inappropriate places, you will be conveying such a message to half your electorate, regardless of all the arguments about history and occupying powers and regional pride.
