U.N. should take responsibility for Haiti's deadly cholera epidemic.

by Martin O'Malley

There is a humanitarian crisis happening in our own hemisphere, but it's not likely you've heard of it. Thousands have died, threatening the economic and social stability of an entire country. And most tragic of all, it was inadvertently caused by a critically important international organization, which has not yet taken full responsibility for its actions.

I am speaking of the cholera outbreak in Haiti.

Ironically, UN troops were brought there to bring peace and safety to the quake ravaged Port-au-Prince. Instead, a Nepalese UN trooper infected the incredibly vulnerable locals with his cholera, due to poor sanitation at the UN facilities. They allowed raw sewage containing cholera to pour out of the UN facility and onto the countryside, infecting Haitian water sources. Precious time was wasted while the UN dragged its feet, at first refusing to even admit there was a problem. 700,000 Haitians have been infected.

The quake killed 200,000 Haitians, but the cholera epidemic will end up killing a lot more.
