British Government Advices the Nation to Take Vitamin D
August 4, 2015 By Shirley Good

The British government has advised the nation to take vitamin D supplements. According to health officials, there is a widespread vitamin D deficiency in Britain. The government has now decided to take action. Dietitians are quick to tell people that a healthy, balanced diet will provide them with all the vitamins they need. Many experts believe that taking supplements is “a waste of time”. According to The Telegraph, some experts are now saying that while this may be the case, it is not true of vitamin D.

Vitamin D, known as the sunshine vitamin, is manufactured in the body during exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Now, experts believe that people who live in Britain do not get enough exposure to UV light. Dreary weather and the northern latitude deprive many people of vitamin D. Scientist Oliver Gillie has argued for vitamin D supplements for many years. He is encouraged by the government’s advice to take vitamin D supplements. He says, “The advice comes not a moment too soon.”

According to the BBC, the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition has produced a draft report, which suggests that British people should take 10 microgram pills to supplement their diet to ensure they get enough of the sunshine vitamin. At present only people at risk are advised to take vitamin D. However, the advisory committee says the risk of taking too much vitamin D is very low. Deficiency in this vitamin can lead to brittle bones, reports the committee.

Government health advisors have called for vitamin D to be offered free of charge after research has shown that deficiency of vitamin D is widespread in Britain, reports The Guardian. According to their research, millions of people in Britain could be deficient. Health advisors have called for older people and ethnic minorities to take vitamin D. It is hoped that children from poorer backgrounds will also be eligible for free supplements. According to current research, rickets in children has risen 10 times over the last two decades. Rickets comes from either a deficiency in calcium or vitamin D. Scientists are now arguing that those who live in the UK will not get enough vitamin D from their diet or from the sun. Health advisors and scientists alike are now calling for better guidance and widespread access to free supplements to address the growing number of British people with vitamin D deficiency.

Everyone 'should take vitamin D pills'
3 August 2015

Everyone should consider taking vitamin D supplements to counter the lack of sunshine in the UK, government experts are proposing.

The draft Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition guidelines suggest, from the age of one, 10 microgram pills be taken to ensure people get enough.

The plans are now being consulted on until 23 September.

<snip>

It comes after the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which advises the NHS on treatments, has already suggested vitamin D should be given more widely to counter a hidden epidemics of deficiency.

<snip>

The NICE guidelines called for more free supplements and for supermarkets to sell low-cost tablets.

Brits Told to Take Vitamin D Pills

British public health authorities now recommend vitamin D pills for everyone.

The People's Pharmacy August 6, 2015

<snip>

New Recommendations for Britons Feature Vitamin D Pills:

But the public health experts have now recognized that in Great Britain it is too difficult to get enough sunshine to make adequate vitamin D. So they are recommending a supplement of 400 International Units per day for everyone.

Recommendations for Americans:

Here in the US, the Institute of Medicine suggests a daily supplement of 600 International Units for most people.

Is a 600 IU Pill Enough Vitamin D?

Some experts believe that dose is too low. They argue that people exposed to sun all day would make around 5,000 to 10,000 IU daily through exposed skin. They think that 5,000 IU would be a more appropriate level for vitamin D pills unless people can get their vitamin D the old fashioned way by going out in the sun.

Bottom Line from The People’s Pharmacy

We are not at all convinced that 600 IU is an adequate intake of vitamin D. We await large, well-controlled trials that actually administer vitamin D3 pills daily or a placebo and track a number of health conditions for a long period of time. Until those studies are completed we will not know the benefits or risks of supplementation.

We do think that low levels of vitamin D circulating in the body are clearly linked to a number of serious health problems including cancer. If you would like to learn more about measuring vitamin D levels and our recommendations for optimal target levels, here is a link to our Guide to Vitamin D Deficiency.

I particate in a study and get tested every year . I am always holding at the threshold for optimum when I get my results , even though I do supplement 1k -3 k daily. I live in a sucky northern cold cloudy place most of the year . I guess they will keep data on me to see how I fair health wise . I often wanted to participate in these kind of studies when I was younger but just would not commit . Now I am happy to be data compliant

D sprays and under tongue dot tabs like twin lab with K3 ) also important ) the easiest to take
The liquids I have had I did not like. You are lucky to have a doctor who is focused on this kind of help for you . IMO
Remember your k3 with D it rhymes so easy to remember many only include K2 BUT >>>>>

. >>>>>Oh yes, please talk with your doctor about supplementing with vit K if you are on a blood thinner.
I forgot about that
if you are on any meds doc needs to know you want to add K !!!

The least as your doc requests should be 50
that is what the study has as threshold

. I was worried with my first test that I had been over dosing myself and I would be off the charts....hahahaha

But I M just only at the minimum threshold !! Even with supplements .
Nice you get tested by doc too. Even though I am in a study I have to pay
Illinoisan too .
Your torso is the best at any age for absorption. so sitting with your face in. Coat ,hat & gloves outside in winter when the sun is Angled weak here just is t going to make it .feels good maybe
optimum Vit D not likely . The darker the skin the less you are absorbing as the OP mentioned ( at any age, season)

keep getting added . Then through research verified and accepted. I hope they can prove out claims /theories regarding life extension .
Regardless I don't feel hoodwinked by warnings years ago that taking vitamin D sups is a good idea . Looks more and more through verification like it was a good idea

A scientist I know drops a 50 k once a week has been for about 5 years but that seems extreme to me even though my tests for the last 2 years just show me barely making it over the line ..... I have been consciously seeking sunlight this summer what little is available ...if my next 3rd year test next month remains just over the border after this effort I may go to 5k -7 k a day because fall starts the drop in sun power here.

By the way you can store vitamin D and also what about groups like Eskimos on traditional diets , why did they not show up high in chronic diseases stats considering the climate ? They are eating sea fare raw which uncooked is high in C and D. They don't need lemons and oranges for C either

Whale blubber is a bog It D source for them So sun no but supplemented via raw fatty fish diet yes. Once off their traditional diet not good stats at all. Rising disease when diet changes started
