I remember talking with some Jewish friends Ihad made when I moved to NYC back in the 60s who felt that anti-semitism played a big role. Being a kid from Texas, I had never considered that, but it is entirely possible.

How big a part it played, I am unsure. This was not uncommon for that time period. Hell, even now it is still in play, just not on the same scale.

Ethel appears to have had little or no involvement.

This says is for me.

How sad to see that two grown men still carry the burden of knowing that their father and their uncle lied and kept their mouths shut to allow their mother to be executed in order to protect an aunt who was a Soviet spy. The sons were "collateral damage" in a spy network without either a father or an uncle looking out for their interests; they were just sacrificial lambs who lost the fullness of a mother's deep love.
