Vance spoke to Sunday ET's G Seetharaman by email about the man and the book. Excerpts:

To me, what Elon is accomplishing and attempting to accomplish is far more valuable than a new app or a consumer entertainment service. I think other people feel the same way and so respond to the gravity of what he's tackling.

He still has much to prove, including making a mass-market car and perfecting reusable rockets. I would, however, argue that he's already done more concrete things to combat global warming than anyone else I can think of and that benefits all humans.

Going into writing the book, I was very skeptical of Musk. Having interviewed 300 or so people and the man himself for many hours, I came away immensely impressed.

I think he would only consider himself a major success if he's able to bring a cheaper electric car to market and start a colony on Mars.

I wouldn't say more than anyone else, but I agree that he's taken on two of the most important tasks for humanity: creating a sustainable civilization on Earth, and extending civilization off Earth.

He isn't just sitting around living off his investments, he works hard on these projects.

And it's inspiring to watch the step-by-step progress he makes.

He is impressive and I would love one of his Tesla cars if they ever come way down in price.
