FBI Director Comey is no ‘coward’ on race

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2015/02/13/fbi-director-comey-is-no-coward-on-race/

By Jonathan Capehart

Six years ago this month, Attorney General Eric Holder delivered a Black History Month speech at the Justice Department that produced a searing and true line. “Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards,” he said. “Though race related issues continue to occupy a significant portion of our political discussion, and though there remain many unresolved racial issues in this nation, we, average Americans, simply do not talk enough with each other about race.”

Yesterday, FBI Director James B. Comey showed he was no “coward.” He delivered a searing and true speech at Georgetown University on the relationship between people of color and law enforcement that mirrored Holder in tone and toughness. That Comey, the 54-year-old son of Irish immigrants and grandson of a police chief, is white and Republican magnified the power of his words.

-snip-

Comey delivered four “hard truths” that spoke to the experience of people of color as they did to law enforcement.

Rest at the link.
