New Defense Chief ‘No Shrinking Violet’
Defense experts predict President Obamas pick to lead the Pentagon will want to leave his own mark on a department where he has spent years working.
They say Ashton Carter, 60, will be a forceful personality, and that his years of experience and close ties with Republicans on Capitol Hill will allow him to stand up to the White House.
What you'll get with Ash Carter is that he's no shrinking violet, said Shawn Brimley, executive vice president and director of studies at the Center for a New American Security. You want someone who's going to come to the table and express views and give the president the benefit of having strong national security advice."
Carter, 60, is widely respected by both Democrats and Republicans, say his supporters.
Washington may be surprised, said Mackenzie Eaglen, resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. He will surely want to make a stamp on the Department of Defense and leave a legacy behind.

(84,711 posts)At this point in a Presidency...Voters have watched the walk and the talk...and become very cautious.
It's a puzzle what Obama wants his "Legacy" to be. The caution of many of us who voted for him is wondering if his Legacy is tied to "Future Rewards" and that those rewards for him and his family will be tied to who he supported and who he gave power or more power to in his Presidential Picks for Cabinet and Advisers he listened to and followed policy from.
So far....for this Obama Twice voter...it's not looking good for me as a Lefty Anti USA Involvement in Endless War's Dem and a Dem who wanted to see Wall Street cleaned up after what it did to the Average Person in our country with Building a Housing Bubble that Crashed..and, this Austerity and growing Privatization of the Public Trusts in the aftermath.
We shall see......
