Turkey aided rise of Islamic State, yet NATO promises to defend Turkey from Islamic State

* Will be interesting tomorrow to see the role Turkey is expected to play in the coalition

-- snip

After all, Ankara is partly to blame for ISIL’s rise. The Erdogan government long ago decided to support the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Ankara allowed opposition fighters from all sides easy access to the battlefield. None were too brutal or radical to bar passage. This included ISIL, which gained strength and resources by conquering Syrian territory. Reported the Washington Post: “eager to aid any and all enemies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Turkey rolled out the red carpet.” The government simply looked the other way as members of the Islamic State and other Islamist groups traveled to Syria.

Indeed, added the Post, Islamic State fighters treated the border town of Reyhanli, Turkey “as their own personal shopping mall.” Local LOCM +1.7% residents acknowledged jihadis purchasing supplies and wounded fighters being treated in local hospitals. One Islamic State commander told the Post: “We used to have some fighters—even high-level members of the Islamic State—getting treated in Turkish hospitals. And also, most of the fighters who joined us in the beginning of the war came via Turkey, and so did our equipment and supplies.” A politician from Reyhanli, Tamer Apis, complained that the government “welcomed anyone against Assad, and now they are killing, spreading their disease, and we are all paying the price.” While there was a lot of blame to go around, “this is a mess of Turkey’s making,” he added.

That Turkey might suffer some unfortunate complications from the bitter civil war next door should not surprise. Blowback is a constant of Middle Eastern policy, irrespective of government. But Ankara knowingly chose to play with fire. The Erdogan government since has changed course, confronting insurgents it once welcomed and attempting to close off what has been called the “jihadist” or “jihadi” highway. But passage for people and materiel through the 565-mile border still is available at a price.

Moreover, the worst damage has been done. Reported Bloomberg’s Mehul Srivastava and Selcan Hacaoglu, ISIL “has already established itself firmly in Turkish society.” The group has gained control of Syrian territory and expanded into Iraq, where it grabbed 49 Turkish diplomats and family members. The Islamic State military leader explained: “Now we are getting enough weapons from Iraq, and there is enough to buy even within Syria. There is no real need to get things from outside anymore.”

Problery time to reconsider the whole membership of Turkey into the NATO alliance - after all - the only reason Turkey back in the day was accepted into NATO was because the country had a border who was close to the mighty Soviet Union - and because Turkey was seen as an "friend" who was in danger of being overrun by the evil communists

And Turkey have their own little game going on in the Middle east - playing many sides at the same time - to gain a more powerfully hand in the area - specially in the north of Iraq - where the kurds have for two decades made them self a nice little state - without statehood - as Turkey have stated rather clearly what a statement of statehood would mean - WAR..... They have a few bones to pluck with the kurds as it is - inside their own country - and they see an independent state in the north of Iraq to be a grave danger to their own interest in the area....

Ankara under Erdogan have been rather islamic in its politic - and have managed to play the game rather well, as they have been able to crush any attempt to stop them for keeping a hand in all this - ISIS is maybe not an direct danger to Turkey at the moment - but I fear that Turkey could experience the same as Iraq and Syria - the warriors might believe they could attack Turkey too - and make an empire for them self also there... After all - some leaders of IS have stated rather clearly - they have plans to expand to Istanbul too - and for getting a foothold in Istanbul - they need to go true the whole of Turkey... What a nightmare that would be for the people of turkey - not to say ancient ruins going back more than 7000 years - as ISIS are known as vandals of a grand scale..

Just found a review of Hagel's trip to Turkey:

http://www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=123117

But read elsewhere that the Turkish government said their troops do not lean towards fighting Isis so they'll just work on border control.. hmm. They really have a lot to lose but it could happen from home grown jihadists so they do have to walk a line.

The Cold war - was one of the reason Turkey got into NATO - as it bordered Soviet and could be used as one of the staging areas to a war with the Soviet union - some of the Soviet Unions largest military based was build as an result of the Turkey membership - right in the path of Georgia - who in 2008 was attacked by Russia - with the arsenal from a soviet era arsenal who was build into the maintains - and could be hit with a nuclear weapons of many megatons - and even then survive rather unharmed - and the arsenal was build to either counter a NATO invasion of the Soviet Union - or to lead the attack on Turkey - as member of the NATO alliance - they even had nuclear weapons in the area - ready to nuke the hell out of the country - but thankfully the war never started - and after the cold war ended - the nuclear weapons stationed on russian soil was dismantled - and returned to other parts of the crumbling soviet union - to be deposed of...

The infamous Jupiter nuclear rockets - was also stationed in the area - on turkey side of the borders - and was given away as a deal between the american President - and the soviet premier - after the world almost got into a nuclear shooting match over Cuba in 1962 - It was a secret deal - as Kenny would deny it ever happened - if it ever got known outside of the ones who had accepted the deal... Of course it was known - a few decades after it all happened - but by then Kennedy was killed - and the russian premier was not in power anymore - and the silly cold war was at it deepest cold - in the 1970s - early 1980s...

I suspect Turkey is walk a fine line - between giving material support for ISIS - and to defend them self against the influence from ISIS - it is a dangerous game they play - and I suspect they are not playing it to well to be honest...
