REPORT: DECOMPOSING BODY FOUND AT ARKANSAS FUNERAL HOME

Source: AP

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- An inspection of an Arkansas funeral home that has since been suspended found bodies stacked in a cooler packed beyond capacity and other bodies that hadn't been embalmed lying out in the open, the inspector wrote.

Leslie Stokes told the Arkansas Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors that one of the bodies she came across during her Jan. 12 inspection of Arkansas Funeral Care in Jacksonville was "half covered in a bed sheet that was saturated in bodily fluids that had seeped from the body," the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported ( http://bit.ly/1JhhIot ). When she returned the next day, the body was still there, "half wrapped in a soiled sheet, unrefrigerated," she wrote.

The board suspended the licenses of the funeral home and its manager, LeRoy Wood, during an emergency hearing Wednesday.

A woman who answered the funeral home's phone Friday said she couldn't take a message for Wood asking for his response to the suspension of his license and allegations against him. In a statement to the board, Wood said: "We have the utmost respect, care and reverence for everyone's loved one we are privileged to serve."

I know and have known hundreds of funeral directors, all of whom were honest, ethical people. The cretins referred to in the article are to be despised, and properly so.

In my religion the deceased body is considered sacred and is supposed to be prepared for burial with the utmost care. What if it was a member of your family?

This funeral home should be closed down.

The scandal first came to light June 7, 1988, when a number of decomposing bodies were found inside the funeral home.[1] A total of 36 bodies, including one fetus, and three sets of body parts were uncovered inside the building.[2][3] Most of the corpses were stacked in a closet, and some had been in the building for as long as a decade.[1]...

FORT WORTH, Texas — The owners of a funeral home, where eight bodies were found unattended Tuesday, say a misunderstanding led police to search the business.

The owner of the building where Johnson Family Mortuary operates said he told the owners to vacate about two weeks ago. The landlord went to the building, which has no refrigerated storage, Tuesday and found eight bodies inside but no employees.

The landlord called police, who obtained a search warrant and located the bodies, "aged from infant to adult, were found in the building in varying stages of decomposition, some quite advanced," according to Fort Worth Police spokesman Raymond Bush.
