DNC ANNOUNCES 2016 CONVENTION DATE

Source: DNC

Washington, DC – DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz today announced the 2016 Democratic National Convention will be held the week of July 25, 2016. The committee is still in final contract negotiations to choose a host city for the convention and will announce the decision in the coming weeks.

“This is the next step to finalize where and when we will nominate the 45th President of the United States, highlight the Democratic Party’s agenda of fighting for expanded opportunity and contrast it with the Republican Party’s commitment to the fortunate few,” said Wasserman Schultz. “We are still in discussions with three excellent cities and are looking forward to a diverse and inclusive convention that displays our party’s values.”

The cities in final contract negotiations with the DNC are Columbus, New York, and Philadelphia.

And having it September, right after the Olympics and Labor Day (which falls on 9-5-16), is too late, especially with the Republican candidate already out campaigning for two months by then. We don't want to give the GOP that much of a head start on framing the issues. The presidential election would be just 7 weeks away, on November 8, 2016.

Maybe because I came of political age during an era when the conventions were typically held in July -- earlier than the 2016 one, in fact. From 1972 through 1992, the Democratic Convention was held in mid- July each time, except 1980. The 2004 convention also was held in July, around the same time that the 2016 convention will be held.

I preferred the July dates because I'm more likely to be on vacation in August and that makes it harder to watch as much (not that the networks carry as much anymore).

Both Parties will know who their candidate is by June. No sense delaying their ability to campaign as nominees.

Too small to have 75,000 people descend for a week. How far out of town are the hotel rooms going to be?

...A convention is frequently a "thank you" for hard working volunteers, and a mechanism to get them revved up for the Fall campaign. A crowded, chaotic setting where things don't work (the shuttle bus network, required because of the distance to the hotels) broke down almost immediately in Charlotte) doesn't put people in a good mood.

Charlotte's shuttle kerfuffle did not keep us from winning anyway. And we can thank the delegates with nice invites and fancy hotels AT THE INAUGERATION IN DC.

Sure there are party bigwigs. There are also thousands of ordinary Democrats who've been elected as Delegates or have been invited as thanks for their efforts.

Most of your "ordinary" democrats are all big donors or related to someone, more often both then neither.

now you can tell if someone is or isn't related to or friends with the right people from if they are wearing a three piece suit to breakfast? Amazing

Like I said I've watched the sausage get made and I know the criteria used to pick your "ordinary democrats."

Think about it, New York state is already a guaranteed state that Democrats will win their electoral votes!

Pennsylvania on the other hand is a state that the Democratic party has won their electoral votes for the last 6 Presidential Elections, however PA is still very much considered a battleground state with its 20 electoral votes!

However I believe the DNC should be held in Ohio because Ohio has sided with the winner of every Presidential Election since 1944, with the exception of the state voting for Nixon over Kennedy in 1960...

Aside from the fact that I am a resident of Ohio, I believe strongly that the DNC should be held in Ohio because of the other 2 states listed the vote in Ohio has consistently been closer than in any other state, with the exception of Florida...

I like the July date myself. Might as well get an earlier start. I think the earlier date is useful. Gets our mojo going...
