Belgium’s Ramdam Film Fest Shut Down Due to Terrorist Threats

Source: Variety

PARIS — Belgium’s Ramdam Film Festival, an annual showcase of politically- and socially-engaged movies, has been cancelled due to threats of a terrorist attack.

The one-week Ramdam fest kicked off as planned Jan. 20 but had to be shut down yesterday as the main venue, the Imagix theater, located in the French-speaking town of Tournai, was being targeted by terrorists, according to reports.

The fest, whose mandate is to “challenge” audiences with thought-provoking films, had secured a solid lineup, headlined by “Timbuktu,” Abderrahmane Sissako’s Oscar-nominated film about Malians fighting the oppressive and barbarian occupation of Jihadists, and Andreas Rocksén’s “The Essence Of Terror,” a controversial documentary about the two Swedish journalists who were shot, captured and sentenced to 11 years in prison in Ethiopia.

“Since its creation in 2011, the Ramdam festival has given a voice to diverse cultural sensibilities and has promoted values of openness, dialogue, tolerance, freedom and exchange,” said the festival, addressing the cancellation. “(Ramdam)’s success and ever-growing participation underscore how much we care about our freedom of expression.”

Maybe you are mistaking the belief that you oughtn't mock the religion of others, which should be common sense even without terrorism. Otherwise, since being aware of what a potential terrorist may do after you mock Allah or Mohammed, you are just asking for trouble.

The attackers on the other hand deserve no sympathy and no mercy.

Does that make any sense to you?

freedom of speech states otherwise. Second, I don't need approval to have an opinion.

And there have been many throughout history that took their freedom of speech to the grave with them. Luckily for most, they understand that self-preservation is a also component of speech. If you don't mind the risks, you are free to say anything to anyone. But, I bet in real life you self-regulate your own speech in order to prevent uncomfortable situations. Anyone that doesn't probably doesn't have many friends.

DU is slipping when a comment so obviously blaming the victim doesn't get the ton of push back that it deserves.

I understood what btrflykng9 and geek tragedy were referring to right away. It would stand to reason that since you don't recognize that you just "sympathized with the France attackers" yourself, you would be equally oblivious to the same thing in any other comments here as well.

People are getting way too accepting of being dominated by authoritarian thugs in our society. When that thuggism hides behind supposedly "offended feelings" and thinking people can't see through that, then the mass Stockholm Syndrome has gone well past ludicrous, and Houston, we have a problem!

Muslims are definitely NOT helping themselves these days.

My philosophy is simple.

If you don't like certain freedoms or the way other people choose to live in a free society, go live somewhere else.

The reverse would be someone from the states bombing or shooting up a government office in Riyadh for not allowing women to drive.
I just stay the hell out of Saudi arabia.
