BOSTONA surgeon at one of the nations most prominent hospitals was shot twice and critically injured Tuesday after he was confronted near his office by an armed assailant who then fatally shot himself, authorities said.
The incident triggered an immediate lockdown at the prestigious Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston. The doctor was rushed to the emergency room by his colleagues and was in surgery in the afternoon, police said. The shooter was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in an examination room.
The event began to unfold about 11 a.m. when the gunman, described as being 6 feet tall and wearing glasses, entered the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center. Police said he went to the doctors second-floor office and asked to speak to him. After an altercation in a foyer between the waiting room and an examination room, the unidentified assailant shot the surgeon twice, police said.
Its leading us to believe that there was something in the past that upset this guy and he came in looking for this particular doctor, said Boston Police Chief William Evans. He said police were looking into the possibility that the man was related to one of the doctors patients but said the investigation is still in the early stages.

A doctor was left with life-threatening injuries after a suspect fired two bullets into him this morning on the cardiovascular floor of Brigham & Womens Hospital, according to Boston police.
Boston police Commissioner William Evans said the suspect came to the second floor of the hospital and asked for the doctor by name before shooting him twice in a foyer between the waiting room and the examining room where he was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
I think the doctor came out to see him and that is when the altercation took place, Evans said. Its leading us to believe that something in the past upset this guy.
Police do not believe the suspect was a patient. Evans added: Were looking for a possible motive. ... No information was immediately provided about the victim.
