Mom who faked daughter's cancer diagnosis apologizes, gets probation

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Andrew J. Nelson

ATLANTIC, Iowa — The mother who made up her 5-year-old daughter’s cancer diagnosis was given five years’ probation Tuesday.

Leatha Slauson, 30, who could have faced up to 21 years in prison, tearfully addressed the court Tuesday and apologized for her actions.

"I am sorry for all of this. I thought Riley was sick and like any mother, I would do anything to help her," she said.

Slauson pleaded guilty in November to several charges, including theft and giving the child drugs that she did not need.

She finds a way to get money from people. I think she's a con not a mental case. But I'm NOT a doctor nor do I play one on TV.

Jail time for someone like this, who is not a violent danger to the community, doesn't serve justice. Probation with counseling seems to be a better use of the people's resources.
