Kentucky teens on alleged crime spree captured in Florida

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Two teenage sweethearts suspected in a crime spree of stolen vehicles and pilfered checks across the South have been taken into custody in Florida, Kentucky authorities said Sunday.

Grayson County Sheriff officials say in a statement that 18-year-old Dalton Hayes and his 13-year-old girlfriend, Cheyenne Phillips, were arrested without incident about 12:10 a.m. Sunday in Panama City Beach. The two had eluded police in multiple states while raising concern about their increasingly bold behavior.

Authorities say U.S. Marshal's Service and local law enforcement in Panama City Beach discovered Hayes and Phillips asleep in a 2001 Toyota Tundra that was stolen in Henry County, Ga. The vehicle was surrounded by law enforcement and both Hayes and Phillips were taken into custody. Authorities plan to extradite Hayes and Phillips back to Kentucky where they are expected to face felony charges.

Hayes and Phillips began their run from the law and their families earlier this month when they vanished from their small hometown in western Kentucky. Authorities believe their travels took them to South Carolina and Georgia.

2. Two points

1) The fact that this was a national news story is absolutely ridiculous.
2) Black Twitter has been hilarious on this, and it continues here: they're "sweethearts" who "pilfered" stuff. I've see numerous comparisons with pairs of African Americans who are described in far harsher terms than these two "sweethearts" (who have stolen multiple cars and even guns...I mean, she's a minor so her transportation over state lines makes it federal).

Hell, on Chicago news last night (again, Chicago's NBC affiliate has 22 minutes to give you the news...why is this nothing story on Chicago LOCAL news?!?), they had a story about their "Mom's" wanted them to "come home."

Ridiculous. This is criming while white to the nth degree. It's almost like the media is now just taunting black folks with these bullshit stories.

3. I agree entirely.

When I turned on the Today Show this morning, this was their FIRST story, and I listened carefully to find out who these two might have killed or whatever. They stole a few trucks, some with guns in them and stole and cashed some checks. No one was killed, no one got Ebola from this, actually nothing really really bad happened other than the thefts of trucks and checks.

I see no reason why this is a national story at all.

The 18 year old will go to prison for a couple years. The 13 year old girl is just too too young to be dating an 18 year old, but hey, it's Kentucky; they do that there.

Why this ever made it to a national story, I guess is the youthful age of the girl, a minor, but she went willingly, and really, she was likely more safe as a runaway with her boyfriend than she would have been had she run away alone.

No story here, and yes, very filled with Caucasian privilege.

6. White crime by white criminals is "glamorized"

Black crime by black criminals is not only demonized, but the entire black community is blamed and considered "at fault" for the infractions of that tiny minority.

I expect that some time in the near future, some entertainment media conglomerate will create a movie about this pair in order to further justify "why" these criminals did what they did and why people should accept that they were not really "at fault" nor is the community that they descend from "at fault".

For the media and many in the white community to continue to ignore the egregious differences in defining, reporting, and justification for behaviors of different communities when it comes to criminal activity, only further illustrates why there is a "perceptional divide" about the criminal justice system.
