Radicalization of prisoners discussed at Canadian roundtable

Source: CBC

Canada's correctional service quietly hosted an international roundtable and symposium last month on how to deal with the radicalization of prison inmates, an alarming trend raising concern in France and around the world in the wake of last week's attacks in Paris.

Don Head, commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), got approval from Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney to fly in participants from other parts of Canada and from the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Israel, France, Spain and the Netherlands at a cost of about $63,000, according to a briefing note obtained by CBC News through Access to Information.

The issue of radicalization behind bars is on the global radar after revelations that two gunmen involved in last week’s attacks in France are believed to have been radicalized in prison.

Citing security reasons, CSC would not disclose the number of radicalized offenders now in custody, but said they can be involved in a wide range of behaviours and activities that support extreme political, religious or ideological objectives or causes, including global jihad, terrorist financing or extreme political militantism.

Canadian Police Make Third Terror Arrest (Associated Press)

TORONTO — Jan 12, 2015, 5:34 PM ET

Canadian police have arrested a third man in an alleged terrorist conspiracy.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Monday that 21-year-old Suliman Mohamed has been charged with participating in the activity of a terrorist group.

On Friday, twin brothers linked to Mohamed, Ashton Carleton Larmond and Carlos Larmond, were charged with terrorism-related offences. Carlos Larmond was arrested Friday at Montreal's airport on charges of intending to travel overseas for terrorist purposes. A government official familiar with the matter said they were trying to get to Syria. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.

Police declined to provide details.
