Newt’s billionaire, Sheldon Adelson, gives $5M to establishment
Source: Politico
Sheldon Adelson, the casino mogul who buoyed Newt Gingrichs presidential bid, poured $5 million into a super PAC supporting establishment GOP candidates, according to new records.
Adelson and his wife Miriam donated the combined millions in February to the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC backed by House Speaker John Boehner and other GOP leaders, according to a campaign finance report filed Sunday night.
The GOP super PAC ended the month with $5.1 million in the bank, positioning the group to be a serious player in targeted House races across the country thanks to the Adelsons.
The Adelsons and their family members helped keep Gingrichs campaign alive by pouring more than $16 million into Winning Our Future, the super PAC that ran ads to support the former speaker.
The wealthy couples shift to supporting the GOP establishment is a promising sign for party operatives, who are hoping to corral some of the deep-pocketed donors that have spent millions on warring super PACs so far this election cycle. Its also a positive signal for presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, whose campaign is counting on Adelson and other wealthy GOP donors to get behind him as he goes up against President Barack Obamas hefty war chest.

(57,936 posts)should Romney win. (Unlikely but remotely possible.)
What cabinet seat do you think Newt wants?
Let's see -- Treasury would go to some Wall Street buddy of Romney's. Secretary of State would have to go to someone who is less abrasive and more stable than Newt. Education -- won't exist. Energy -- will be co-opted into the Dept. of the Interior, and Romney would want a Utah, Mormon conservative or a southern conservative for that post with all its fund-raising potential.
How about the Department of Casinos and Gambling (I know. It would have to be created, but if the Republican Party keeps wandering off to the right as it has been doing since 1980, should be no problem.)? That would be perfect for Newt since it doesn't involve much work or require much poise. And having such a close friend in charge of the "Gaming" industry would keep Adelson and his billions in the Republican corral for a long time.
