Taliban storm Pakistan prison, free 384 inmates

PESHAWAR: Scores of Taliban insurgents, armed with automatic weapons and rocke tpropelled grenades, stormed a prison in Pakistan's northwestern town of Bannu and freed around 400 prisoners, including dozens of terrorists, on Sunday.
Officials described at least 23 of the escapees as "very dangerous militants" and identified one as Adnan Rashid, who was sentenced to death for an attack on former president Pervez Musharraf.
The raid is a major setback for Pakistan's security forces that have gained considerable ground against the Taliban in the tribal region bordering Afghanistan .
"Once inside the prison, the attackers first headed towards a barrack where deathrow prisoners including Adnan Rashid were kept. These people came for him and maybe around 20 other hardcore militants but freed more than 350 other prisoners too," provincial information minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said. "We will investigate why militants were able to carry out such an attack successfully and what the security officials were doing," he said.

(6,917 posts)This is the new-and-improved American way to fight war--- using mercenaries and profiteer corporations and corrupt governments to do the job that soldiers and the U.S. drafted military used to do.
So, I guess all the geniuses who push for government and military to operate like a business must've gotten a rock-solid warranty and guarantee from Pakistan for the billions they paid to fight terrorism and keep the Taliban prisoners-of-war locked up?
Like a business, when they purchased a product I'm sure they got a guarantee. And if they spent my tax money without a guarantee, then they are as guilty as the corrupt Pakistani security forces that opened the prison doors for this raid.
Where's my fuckin' guarantee???? I'm pissed and now "officially" over the edge. No more pleasant liberal, now they have to deal with a stubborn, hard-nosed, and unwavering liberal not backing down in the face of their mealy-mouth business solutions.

(328 posts)At this point the US Military can only do two things regarding Afghanistan - Drop the hammer and turn the whole fucking region into a glass parking lot or GTFO and bring every service man/woman, contractor, etc. home.
The former is not an option.

(136 posts)and stop sending money and anything else that they could use to hurt anybody. Time to face reality about Pakistan...EVEN if it is an election year for the U.S.

(6,670 posts)We, and them, set off explosives, in third countries as well as in theirs, to kill warriors and civilians. There's a bunch of countries up to this, as it's the only effective way to fight the US, and our only effective response is the 90% civilian kill rate we're practicing.
So just how would someone recommend a country morally go to war against the United States without offending anyone? God knows there's enough reasons to. It seems to be the size of our military and not agreement with our policies that stops people.

(42,239 posts)(Reuters) - Heavy street fighting between militants and security forces in the centre of the Afghan capital, Kabul, ended on Monday after 18 hours of gunfire, rocket attacks and explosions, police and government officials said.
Battles which broke out at mid-day on Sunday gripped the city's central districts through the night, with explosions and gunfire lighting up alleys and streets.
The Afghan Defence Ministry said 32 insurgents were killed in the attacks which paralysed Kabul's government district, and which targeted three other provinces in what the Taliban called the start of a spring offensive. One fighter was captured.
"In only a short time we managed to cut short their devilish plans and all 32 insurgents were killed. They carried suicide vests, but managed to do nothing except be killed," Defence Ministry Chief of Operations Afzal Aman said.
