So no, that is not an assumption a reasonable person would make. It is jumping to a conclusion that is false. Yes, there are some members who are not Americans who are just curious about American politics.

I can name about a dozen DU members off the top of my head that I know live abroad and those are only the ones I have personally interacted with. I'm sure there are many more than that.

We've had someone insisting that Mario Cuomo wasn't the "liberal" he's set up to be.

We've had someone claiming Andrew Cuomo (and Mario) were "anti-labor".

I was accused of being "anti-woman" because I'm not supporting Elizabeth Warren for President, even though I'm supporting Hillary Clinton as of now.

Those are only a few examples of what I've seen here since the weekend. Now we've got this?

To ask anyone on this board that question, which had zero to do with the OP, is implying I would have some problem. That is a bait, pure and simple.

The Cuomo slogan was repeated yesterday in the New York Times, in their obituary of him. So I guess someone forgot to tell them "it was determined decades ago as not HIS slogan, but a "dirty trick" by someone else."

....that no one of Social Security age should run for President. As I said, my question was to show the silliness of your declaration. To disqualify anyone based on a demographic (age, sex, race, religion, etc.) is ridiculous.

Now twist and spin and isolate the question any way you want, it won't change the reason for the question.

I know the NY Times printed that expression yesterday, and it was repeated several times after the news of his death and discussion of his life and political career. But they did NOT say it was Cuomo's "campaign slogan", did they?

Just as you left out the context of my so-called "baiting" (your terminology) question, you also conveniently left out the context of the term as it was used in the NY Times obituary:

It was a harsh campaign. In one instance placards appeared in middle-class neighborhoods proclaiming, “Vote for Cuomo, Not the Homo.” (Mr. Koch declined to answer questions about his sexual orientation.)

Mr. Cuomo and his son Andrew, a campaign adviser, denied having anything to do with the placards, though Mr. Koch said he never fully believed it.

The way you present it, Cuomo was behind the incident AND he embraced it as his "campaign slogan". Both are totally false!

as not HIS slogan, but a "dirty trick" by someone else." So clearly, since it is being reported decades later, it has NOT been determined it was not his slogan and it has not been determined that the infamous "someone else" was behind it. If that has been determined -- name them.

When campaigns get caught in hot water they always say "its not us". Always the infamous "someone else."

That doesn't mean it's true, and I haven't seen anyone in a long time claim that it's true. At this point in time, other than in a review of Mario Cuomo's exemplary career, that incident is barely mentioned.

You're just being argumentative, just as you were in dozens of posts yesterday. Remember, this is a discussion of Harry Reid, not Mario Cuomo. Yet you're trying to start an argument about Mario Cuomo as you tried to start one about my avatar and citizenship. Want to gripe about the color of the sky too?

On Thursday, Senator Reid received treatment at University Medical Center in Las Vegas for injuries sustained in an accident he suffered while exercising at home in Henderson.

A piece of equipment Senator Reid was using to exercise broke, causing him to fall and break a number of ribs and bones in his face.

Senator Reid will return to Washington this weekend and be in the office Tuesday as the Senate prepares to reconvene. His doctors expect a full recovery.

Senator Reid was first brought to St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Henderson by his security detail. He was then transferred to UMC for further testing, where he was admitted overnight as a precaution.

Fri Jan 2, 2015, 01:01 PM

Sandoval won heavily this time around because the Dems refused to support a viable candidate (he won the last time because he's charismatic, knows how to lie through his abnormally white teeth, and seriously sucked up to the Hispanic population of the state).

The scuttlebutt was that Harry made a back-room deal with Sandoval in order to get Medicaid expanded in the state. If Sandoval supported it (which he did), then the Dems wouldn't make a serious challenge to his reelection bid (which they didn't). So, the party refused to support viable candidates - among them the very popular termed out AG, Katherine Cortez-Mastos (we elect all our politicians, so the governor's cabinet is a mixed bag, party-wise) . . . and ran Bob Goodman, who no one had ever heard of before the election season started. Even then, he received minimal support from the party - I hope he got some kind of nice pay-off for agreeing to be made a laughing stock.

Nevada is divided pretty evenly, with the south (Clark Co./Las Vegas) more liberal than the north. Dems didn't do well this election for a variety of reasons (turn-out among younger voters was abysmal, particularly in the south) - but Sandoval didn't win just because of that. He won because the Dem party gave the voters no real choice and they responded with a resounding "meh".

As to whether or not he'll take Harry's seat? It's a possibility - Harry manages to piss off Dems in the state on a regular basis. But it wouldn't be a vote for Sandoval as much as an indictment of Harry.

"Hugely popular" is a gross over-statement. Really.

Roughly speaking, the older half of the baby boomers, younger half of GenX, and older half of Millennials tend to be liberal.
The younger half of baby boomers and older half of GenX tend to be conservative.

The "Reagan Revolution" was driven by younger boomers and older GenX. They formed a coalition that is the core of the Republican party today.

Older boomers failed to form a coalition with younger GenX. Instead, they were aligned with WWII-era Democrats. They did not address the issues younger GenX wanted addressed. As a result, younger GenX participated far less than other voting groups. Which meant far fewer young GenX entered politics. So there are far fewer of them to select from at higher levels of government.

Given the low participation rate and institutional barriers, this will probably continue until the number of older Boomers in politics drops a lot due to old age.

LOL. People discriminate every day of their lives. If you want to hire a babysitter for your kids do you hire the first person on CL wanting job?

Voters hire a president. And yes, I am the gatekeeper for my vote. Who else would be? I think a president should be mentally and physically capable for the job. I know DU is senior dominated since there have been many age poll threads on the subject. So I guess I know where some of the anger is coming from.

I also think SC justices should have mandatory retirement. Funny, I have never seen you post saying "ageist" when people say various SC justices are too old.

When I worked in a steel mill there were many jobs older people could not do. In other jobs there were people who did not have the mental stamina to do it. I guess at your company you would hire people randomly since anything other than that is by definition discriminatory.

So I am in that pool who is a "decider" whether you like it or not. I notice you don't put what your requirements are. Are you afraid someone will say its discriminatory? Well guess what? No matter what you put down it will be.

Fortunately, most people don't employ that sort of ageist bigotry when making their choice. And most people would be ashamed to admit that it was a key criteria in their minds!

I don't think you're in the critical mass of deciders, frankly--and I think you are not representative of most of the Democratic Party in the way you approach older Americans serving in the Senate.

which is what we were discussing in this sub-thread. Not remotely close. I have voted for older people for the Senate. If you think I am the only person you must avoid alot of threads on DU. Or you willfully forget them for the purposes of this thread. How about all the Grandpa McCain threads which have attacked McCain running for president purely on age. An assessment I agree with btw.

No one knows the Senate rules better than Harry Reid--no one. And that's what it takes to be leader.

I'd say your post is an indication of your understanding of how the Senate chooses their leadership.

And your use of scare quotes with the word "accident?" That says a lot about you, too--none of it terribly impressive.

Capitol Police, who provide a security detail for top leaders including Reid, were driving the majority leader in one of the force's top security vehicles, a Chevrolet Suburban SUV. Reid is at home campaigning for President Obama and Democratic candidates in Nevada. The accident occurred on a heavily traveled portion of I-15 just west of the Las Vegas Strip, where most of the city's most famous casinos reside.

Fri Jan 2, 2015, 12:06 PM

And that enabled him to make the charge that Mitt didn't pay any taxes, and play the "Put up or shut up" game with Mitt--that caused Mitt to back down, because he KNEW it was true. Harry helped POTUS win re-election, make no mistake.

What's this "most of DU" stuff?

Do Democrats and other progressives not believe in separation of church and state?

I don't give a shit if a person worships My Little Pony, so long as they don't drag their personal beliefs into the public square. I think most DUers have the same attitude.

I've never seen HR do that, put his personal religious views up front--which is why I think he's an extraordinarily effective Leader and Senator.

about the way RMoney brought religion into the public square. No one gives Harry Reid any shit about his religious faith--why? Because he doesn't USE it as a moral cudgel.

Anyone who doesn't know about the whole Reid-Mormon-tax stuff was asleep at the wheel. That was a MAJOR turning point of the last election.

Good grief, sometimes I am amazed ... not in a good way, either. The people who post here are supposed to be more politically aware than the average individual.

Here, since this Big Story apparently managed to pass you by.....this was HEAVILY covered here at DU, as well as on every nightly news show for weeks on end--can't imagine how you might have missed it:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0912/81632.html

Reid, a Mormon, said he agreed with Gregory A. Prince, a Mormon historian who wrote a blog post criticizing Romney in the wake of the Republican’s remarks disparaging the “47 percent.”
“He said that Romney has sullied the religion that he, Prince and Romney share,” Reid said on the conference call. “And he’s so disappointed that in his words, ‘It’s a good religion and he’s hiding from it.’”
Republicans took issue with Reid’s theological dabbling.
“Shame on them,” Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) told the Tribune. “Harry Reid seems to be making this way too personal and consequently throwing the religion under the bus for his own personal gain. That’s not where anyone should be going with this. He’s taking this two steps too far.”
Earlier this year, Reid alleged Romney hadn’t paid any taxes for at least one year. According to a summary of Romney’s tax rates released by the nominee’s accountant, his lowest-ever tax rate was 13.66 percent.

it's quite obvious, looking through this thread with the "martini" and "glug glug" accusations, that most of the snipers know jack-shit-nada about Reid, who does not drink. This kind of stuff says more about the people making the comments than anything else.

I can sure relate to those unexpected injuries and tell you that old bones are slow to mend. I don't see how anyone of his age and with those injuries can realistically expect to return to work after just a couple of days of recovery.

Another article provides more details:

"Adam Jentleson, the senator's spokesman, told the Associated Press that the accident occurred when an elastic exercise band broke and hit the 75-year-old Reid in the face, causing him to fall. As the senator fell, Jentleson said, Reid struck part of the equipment and broke several bones near his right eye. Reid broke several ribs as he hit the floor."
