NYC Labor May Break With Police Union
Source: Buzz Feed

New York Citys top progressives have backed away from any direct confrontation with the citys largest police union, even as union leaders continue to criticize the mayor following the shooting of two officers.
But the silence of non-police unions may not last long into the new year.
That will depend on the actions of Patrick Lynch, the president of the Patrolmens Benevolent Association, and whether he continues his public campaign against Mayor Bill de Blasio, sources with knowledge of union thinking say. Unions were instrumental in getting de Blasio elected and are considered among his closest allies.
Those that are closer to traditional institutional players will probably, hopefully, be more willing to shun those who are using an inappropriate tone, one senior union official told BuzzFeed News.

(19,326 posts)Having been a strong supporter of labor unions my entire life, I have often
wondered how long it would take for Non-police Unions to take strong
exception to police "unions", and their thuggish anti-constitutional antics.
Thank you Patrick Lynch for waking up this sleeping giant. May it eat you
alive.

(165 posts)The Citizens are in charge not the cops. The people must urge for reform in the NYC police department. The UNION is too radical to be in charge of the police. The Mayor and even the Governor needs to get Tough with the Union Leaders.

(9,126 posts)I am 100% pro union, but I believe that should be for worker's conditions and rights. The police union is used to, as you said, cover up and condone criminal behaviour. But I do think that it's ironic that cops are supposed to be treated with kid gloves and teachers are shit on and spit on with impunity. I do believe that once the wealthy start privatizing police forces, we will see the kid gloves come off about cops.

(156 posts)about the time they started insisting on being called "educators" instead. The teacher of yesteryear, who was one of the most admirable of persons, now seems almost non-existent.

(5,604 posts)they are not 'workers' in the sense of McDonalds workers trying to organize, instead they are there to preserve the existing order of exploitation of the proletariat, they are niche contractors offering protection to the establishment. I'd sooner see a unionized military that can vote and refuse wars for 1%'ers profit.
