Tuna linked to salmonella outbreak in 20 states

Source: CBS

(AP) WASHINGTON - A yellowfin tuna product used to make dishes like sushi and sashimi sold at restaurants and grocery stores has been linked with an outbreak of salmonella that has sickened more than 100 people in 20 states and the District of Columbia, federal health authorities said Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration said 116 illnesses have been reported, including 12 people who have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Moon Marine USA Corp. of Cupertino, Calif., also known as MMI, is voluntarily recalling 58,828 pounds of frozen raw yellowfin tuna. It was labeled as Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA when it was sold to grocery stores and restaurants and is scraped off the fish bones and looks like a ground product.

The product is not available for sale to individual consumers but may have been used to make sushi, sashimi, ceviche and similar dishes available in restaurants and grocery stores. Many of the people who became ill reported eating raw tuna in sushi as "spicy tuna," the FDA said.

Moon is now “dominating one of America’s trendiest indulgences: sushi,” according to the Chicago Tribune as reported by Monica Eng, Delroy Alexander and David Jackson.

The Moon-controlled enterprise called “True World Group” has apparently largely fulfilled the would-be “messiah’s” 1980s prophecy. The business ”builds fleets of boats, runs dozens of distribution centers and, each day, supplies most of the nation’s estimated 9,000 sushi restaurants” reports the Chicago Tribune.

True World Foods reported revenue for 2005 was $250 million. Its fleet of 230 refrigerated trucks delivers raw fish to 7,000 sushi and fine-dining restaurants across America and Moon’s Alaska plant processes more than 20 million pounds of salmon, cod and pollock annually.

9. Moon Marine not connected to True World Foods

Just some facts with a word of caution:

* True World IS Rev. Moon-associated
* I'm NOT a defender of "moonies" (completely different faith)
* I DON'T work for True World or any of its suppliers
* The sushi world IS being rocked by this salmonella outbreak
* I AM an avid sushi fan
* I AM an employee of the largest retailer of sushi products on the west coast

more importantly...
* Moon Marine has NO connection to True World Foods
and
* True World Foods does NOT source any products from Moon Marine

It's probably wise to NOT make connections that aren't there...since doing so CAN start an internet rumor whose source CAN be traced.

In Japan, the fish that is sold for sushi is subject to strict handling conditions. For example, you cannot sell any fish for sashimi (raw fish) or sushi (vinegared rice with raw fish or other toppings) unless it was caught the previous night.

Even in Japan, I prefer to eat my raw fish at department store basement grocery store seafood counters, because they have the freshest and highest quality fish outside of the immediate Tsukiji Market area.

That is what i thought when i first heard about this: That the tuna had been radiated because of the radiation in the Pacific from Japan.

I am sure if it was radiated the government would tell us and not blame the sickness - which is similar to radiation sickness - on radiation like Caesium or Strontium of which tons were deposited in the Pacific.
