Russian opposition faces Internet censorship

Source: AP-Excite

By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV

MOSCOW (AP) — Supporters of Russia's most prominent opposition leader on Tuesday revived their campaign to stage a protest near the Kremlin, despite government attempts to hamper their efforts by Internet censorship.

Last week, prosecutors asked a court to sentence Alexei Navalny, President Vladimir Putin's chief foe, to 10 years in prison for allegedly defrauding a cosmetics company, charges he dismissed as ludicrous.

Navalny's supporters set up a group on Facebook to organize a protest on Jan. 15, the day when the court is to deliver its verdict. But the Russian communications oversight agency, Roskomnadzor, said it had requested that Facebook block the group, which it did over the weekend.

Facebook spokesman Andrew Souvall said the company wouldn't comment.

Alexei Navalny had NO support in the Election for the DUMA in 2011 or 2012 elections

The Duma Election in 2011:

The Presidential election in 2012:

This is typical of Western reports on Russia, when the Communist party has a decline in votes or membership it is reported, but any increase in votes or membership is ignored. The main opposition to Putin is the Communist Party, but the West does NOT want to even acknowledge that the Communist party of Russia still exists, but it has a solid base of support and the main opposition to Putin not this latest Oligarch who the West want to embrace.
