Slimy Baltimore FOX Affiliate Caught Faking "Kill a Cop" Protest Chant

Last night, Baltimore's WBFF aired a video of protesters chanting "kill a cop" evidence, it claimed, of murderously violent rhetoric on the part of anti-brutality protesters in Washington, D.C. The only problem? The protesters weren't chanting "kill a cop" at all, and there's video evidence to prove it.

We can't stop!
We won't stop!
'til killer cops are in cell blocks!
Not a particularly provocative chant, all things considered: protesters are announcing their intention to continue organizing until murderous police officers are put in jail. Fair enough!
That is, until Baltimore's local FOX affiliate got their hands on this video. Here's their interpretation of it:
We can't stop!
We won't stop!
So kill a cop!

WBFF is the flagship station of the rightwing Sinclair Broadcast Group. I figure they're the real culprits here, rather than FOX, as networks have little to no input into local affiliate newscasts.
Sinclair, who owns the station, has a long history of inserting political propaganda into its "news" operations, and then forcing outlets in its nationwide chain to carry it. (I once worked for a station that was bought out and ruined by SBG, and can tell you stories about their rightwing advocacy and forcing content into affilaite shows)

The critics are getting this one a bit wrong and letting SBG off the hook.
Sinclair's take:

(5,751 posts)I swear that I don't understand how Fox News (network or affiliates) are allowed to use "News" in their names. Apparently you can willingly lie with abandon, ignore major stories altogether, and put thousands of people on the edge of stochastic terrorism and still be a legitimate "news" station.
DFW
(54,397 posts)Fox would not be allowed to call themselves "news." They even went to court to protect their right to lie on the air, and they won the case by contending they could say whatever they wanted to under the First Amendment (free speech).

Photographer: Boy, you aint scared of nothing! Damn! When you get older are you going to stay away from all these guns?
Boy: No.
Photographer: No? What are you going to do when you get older?
Boy: Im going to have me a gun!
Photographer: You are! Why do you want to do that?
Boy: Im going to be the police!
Photographer: OK, then you can have one.

(38,613 posts)I'm glad the channel had to publicly retract itself, and have the chanter on their show.. Even if they play dumb, some of their veiwers will become aware of how easy it is to invent a narrative with selective editing.

(14,093 posts)Last night on Fox45 News at Ten we aired a story regarding the increased risk in being a police officer in light of recent grand jury rulings and the shooting deaths of two police officers in New York City. We aired part of a protest covered by CSPAN that appeared to have protesters chanting kill a cop. We spoke to the person in the video today and she told us that is not what she was chanting. Indeed, Tawanda Jones, says she was chanting, We wont stop til killer cops are in cell blocks. We invited Tawanda to appear on Fox45 News at 5:00 and Fox45 News at Ten tonight for an interview so we can discuss the video and the recent violence in New York City. She has kindly accepted and we will bring you that tonight.
Jones should still sue them for defamation.

(27,461 posts)no, they already knew what she was chanting. The video is cut at exactly the part where it would have been known what she was chanting. It was a deliberate edit.

(14,093 posts)Speaking from experience in TV, I can tell you this would have gone through a reporter, a video editor and a closed caption transcriber before it saw air.
This was deliberate.

(1,076 posts)Other than some football, I can't think of when I've watched a faux network program. How can people continue to trust spin doctors? How can we reduce the faux network viewers. Fewer viewers equals less advertising revenue. This fabrication solidifies my opinion of the fox network. Is my opinion based on anecdotal information as it dovetails with the national programs, wrong?

(32,705 posts)that edits in protesters yelling, "What do we want? Dead cops!" In this age of Photoshop and Audacity, it's amazing that none of the local stations or cable news networks bother to verify these clips before running them.
