His voice was amazing and his timing perfect.

(6,568 posts)Then came "The Wonder Years", which had the beautiful intro, searing guitars, and this raspy soulful voice that I fell in love with as an pre-teen. Now, at 35, I've rediscovered much of his back catalog, but to me... This version is THE version. Of course, I didn't discover the Beatles until my teens, I heard his first, and much prefer it.
He will be missed.

(13,871 posts)A unique style. Years ago a bunch of us had the Woodstock movie on TV, and someone made the comment that she was impressed that "someone with his condition" was willing to get up on stage. The whole room fell out laughing, as someone explained to her that his 'condition' was a combination of drugs and really, really being into the music.
I'll bet he was a great guy to party with.

(111,264 posts)It was the "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" tour and remains one of my favorite concerts. I did lighting, so most of them were a blur, but this group hadn't been together long enough to lose the air of spontaneity.
He looked like he had some sort of palsy on the stage, but man, could he sell a song!
Rita Coolidge was also with the show, quite a few other people who went on to various stages of success as solo performers.
ETA: From that tour

(46,436 posts)I agree about the palsy ... he seemed to almost be electrified. That was one amazing show.

(3,426 posts)I had just moved here and was determined to take advantage of all the great new and old music that is always going on in this town.
He still had it, I assure you. Put on a great show. I thoroughly enjoyed it and listen to his music all the time driving around the hill country. Came to appreciate him even more that when I was young.
I have some recordings from my Iphone that I took at that show. I wont post them though, there is way better quality stuff out there already, but they will just be my guilty little pleasure.

(24,780 posts)At either Memorial Stadium in Austin with ZZ Top (the picture inside the Tres Hombres album) or the Rolling Stones in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The blur together now. He only played 4 or 5 songs of what should have been a 45 minute set. He kept going behind an amp tower to throw up. He was that drunk.
I understand he cleaned up around 1980 and was clean after that.
NorthCarolina
(11,197 posts)Had a 69 Fury III, my second car, and it had an in-dash 8-track player. I thought I had arrived. The first two tapes I purchased for it were the Rolling Stones Hot Rocks, and Joe Cocker (self titled album).
My favorite track from the joe cocker album
"Sandpaper Cadillac"
Riding along in a sandpaper Cadillac
Somebody's strikin' a match on the back
Brimstone lines marring the body so fair
Brimstone lines marring the body so fair
Slowly, my mind and dream change into woe, now
My car is dead and gone, Lord
And I just can't carry on
Changing, my thoughts become so clear to me
My car wants to be free, I know
And it's calling out to me, yeah
Walking along with a gold-plated pussycat
Somebody's pouring blood on its back
Paint that has pierced all the pores in his hide
Paint that has pierced all the pores in his hide
Slowly, my mind and dream change into woe, now
My cat is all alone, I know it
And it hasn't got a bone
Changing, my thoughts become so clear to me
My cat begins to sleep
And it's sleeping 'round with me
Don't you know I need that thing so bad
My car and my cat are going bad
And I need everything I can, Lady
Aaaaa! Oh, no no, this can't be the same, no
They're gonna meet me once again, yeah
They're gonna meet me once again, Lord
R.I.P. Mr. Cocker

(11,065 posts)Mentioning 8-tracks though, I definitely remember one of my brothers having an 8-track of his. My sister still has the old family 8-track player and it still works! Though the only tape left that still works is the Pink Floyd one. Ah, good memories. And here I felt old for mentioning "album". I admit I still have all my albums, too.
How do people de-seed their weed without albums?
