Lightning strike injures seven at Raymond James Stadium

Source: Tampa Tribune

By Howard Altman

TAMPA — A lightning strike that hit in a Raymond James Stadium parking lot shortly after Sunday’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers game ended sent at least seven people to the hospital, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

The patients, who ranged in age from early 20s to a man in his 70s, did not appear to be severely injured and were in stable condition, said Jason Penny, spokesman for Tampa Fire Rescue. He said one person was knocked unconscious.

The lightning bolt struck in Lot 14, apparently damaging the sun roof of a sport utility vehicle near where several people were standing a few minutes after the end of the game between the Bucs and the Green Bay Packers, firefighters said. Lot 14 is near Himes Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

None of the people was directly hit by the lightning bolt, which struck around 4:15 p.m., Penny said. The force of the bolt knocked some people to the ground while others were hit by flying rocks and debris, he said.

Rick Halvorson arrived at the parking lot after the game to find his Lincoln MKX SUV damaged. He was walking to his car when he heard the thunder but didn’t know anyone was injured until he saw people on the ground, he said. The strike shattered the sunroof on his SUV, he said. JASON BEHNKEN/STAFF
