U.S. Border Agents Wound Canadian Wielding Gun

Source: NY Times

The federal border agency said Sunday that a Canadian man was shot and wounded after pointing a handgun at guards at the Ambassador Bridge crossing between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

Customs and Border Protection said in a statement that the man stopped his car before an inspection booth around 3 a.m. on Sunday and starting walking toward border officers while waving a gun.

The officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but the man refused and instead pointed his gun in the officers’ direction, prompting them to open fire.

The man was treated at a hospital before being taken to jail, Kris Grogan, a spokesman for Customs and Border Protection, said in a statement.

... I'd say, yes, they did. What else would you have them do? Yell out, "Hey, can ya wait there a bit until we can get a social worker here so we can talk this out?"... Additionally, one doesn't bring a taser to a looming gun fight. I wouldn't, would you? Oh, and the Spiderman shooting web-net is still in development, so that's out. Put yourself in those border agents' shoes. What would you do?

... sarcasm or not. There's plenty of Americans who neither own guns or want to own guns. Having one is not a requirement.

It was still an absurd comment. If you were trying for humor, I find no humor in someone getting shot. BTW, what was your point?

I don't remember ever being hindered from leaving the US to enter Canada - I could have carried a bazooka if I wanted. It's the entry point where you have to submit to inspection. The Canadians probably had no idea he was armed. And it's insulting to accuse the US officers of taking joy in doing what they felt necessary to protect themselves.

... only pursued. Had he waved a gun around and pointed it at the Windsor police, chances are he would have been shot, too. I've met and talked to Windsor policemen several times. Very professional and they don't play. They are use to Americans crossing over to party at the bars, strip clubs and the casino there, particularly younger people who get rowdy. The drinking age in Ontario is 19, Michigan is 21. The OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) are even tougher... I live in Michigan and have crossed over at Sault Ste Marie, Sarnia and Windsor many times over the years and spent much time in Canada. A bit of advice; Treat the Canadian police with respect. Oh, get a DWI there and you'll probably never get to return. Heck, have one on your record in the US and they won't let you in unless you jump thru a lot of hoops beforehand. Seriously...

They aren't as bad as the rotten ones down here, but when Canadian cops go bad, there's definitely some competition..

I'm sure if he had pointed the gun at Canadian cops they'd have gunned him down too. This was not another Eric Garner.

The point is that Canadian cops are far closer to America than European ones and certainly would have opened fire on this guy if he had acted towards them the way he did towards American cops.

Seriously, you'd be better off sticking with your usual line, blame American gun culture for exporting the gun to Canada and arming this guy. The real root cause of police violence is preemptive fear of armed civilians, n'est ce pas?
