Protesters of police killings to march on DC

Source: AP-Excite

WASHINGTON (AP) — Protesters plan to converge on the nation's capital on Saturday to help bring attention to the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of police and call for legislative action.

Civil rights organizations plan to hold a national march in Washington with the families of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, two unarmed black men who died in incidents with white police officers, to help bring attention to the issue of police brutality. Civil rights advocate The Rev. Al Sharpton also will be part of the march.

Protests — some violent — have occurred around the nation since grand juries last month declined to indict the officers involved in the deaths of 18-year-old Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Garner, 43, who gasped "I can't breathe" while being arrested for allegedly selling loose, untaxed cigarettes in New York. Politicians and others talked about the need for better police training, body cameras and changes in the grand jury process to restore faith in the legal system.

FULL short story at link.

FILE - This combination of undated photos provided by the Brown family and the Garner family via the National Action Network shows Michael Brown, left, the black 18-year-old who was fatally shot by a white police officer in Ferguson, Mo. in August 2014, and Eric Garner, who died after a white police officer had him in a chokehold in the Staten Island borough of New York in July 2014. Recent protests against the police killings of Eric Garner and Michael Brown have created a conundrum for the nation's black fraternities and sororities: to remain relevant in the black community they need to be involved, but protect their reputations if demonstrations go awry. Tomorrow's (that's today Saturday 12/13/14) Millions March protest is anticipated to be massive, with hundreds of thousands of people marching in solidarity for Eric Garner, Michael Brown and other unarmed black men killed by cops. Here's what you need to know:

Why it's happening: The Millions March website states that "New York is Ferguson. Ferguson is New York." The march is a "day of anger" to demand justice, show solidarity and let it be known that Garner and Brown's deaths were not in vain. "...It is a time for people to come together as a community to grieve, express pain and outrage, and begin the process of healing," the website reads. "This movement is grounded in principles of love, respect for human life, and a unifying belief that, together, we can transform our future."

Who organized it: "A coalition of young multi-racial activists led by Black organizers in New York," the website says.
