Rick Santorum Announced He’s Running for President and Nobody Noticed

Rick Santorum cant get no respect. No regard, neither.
The former senator and unexpectedly durable 2012 primary contender told the Washington Post Tuesday he was all in for 2016.
This wasnt exactly a surprise Santorum is not subtle about his ambitions but in a cable news landscape obsessed to the point of parody with prying 2016 tidbits out of potential candidates, Santorums announcement landed with a thud. Fox & Friends First picked it up for a quickie announcement. CNNs Inside Politics, a show as insidery as its title suggests, did one segment on it. That was it.
Santorum did give his announcement to the Post, which suggests his initial audience may have been the Beltway crowd (and their funders). But it appears the major news outlets remain more fascinated with glitzier names like Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Mitt Romney 3.0, and even Lindsey Graham than they are with Santorum.

Ricky calls dibs on the rumble seat for the clown car!
If you can't hold a senate seat, just run for president endlessly to make a living. It's the GOP way.

(1,415 posts)If past GOP picks are any indicator, he'll be the nominee:
Reagan lost to Nixon in '68, but won the nod for '80.
Bush Sr. lost the nod to Reagan in '80, but got it in '92
Dole lost the nod in '92, but got it in '96
McCain lost in 2000, but got it in '08
Romney lost in 2008, but got it in '12
Santorum lost in '12, but could he get it in '16?

(1,301 posts)But maybe if a Republican actually wins as an economic populist against a Democrat, our party might come back to its senses.

(10,500 posts)He had been Gerald Ford's running mate in in 1976. He got creamed in 1980, but came close to beating Bush Sr. in 1988, even winning the Iowa caucuses. In 1992 George HW Bush was opposed by Pat Buchanan in the primaries, not Bob Dole. Buchanan ran against Dole in 1996, winning the New Hampshire Primary.
Reagan had a half-hearted campaign in 1968. He didn't all-out run until 1976 when he narrowly lost to Gerald Ford. Of course, back in 1968 the nominees were basically picked by the conventions. The primaries first started to matter a little bit back in 1960 when JFK used them to pick propel himself to the Democratic nomination. But it wasn't until 1972 when the primaries extended to all 50 states on the Democratic side, and the people really started to choose the candidates for the first time. It was 1976 when the GOP first started having nation-wide primaries to pick the nominee.
Santorum may have been the nominal runner-up in the 2012 Republican Primaries, but he didn't come out of that race with the same standing that Bush Sr, Dole, McCain or Romney had after theirs. It was more like Lamar Alexander after 1996, where he did OK, but still didn't feel like the next guy in line for the 2000 party nomination.

(5,477 posts)the OP said that nobody noticed he was running for President, and nobody noticed. My 'nobody noticed' was referencing that. I know that most here are quite aware (and enjoying the hell out of) his frothy little name recognition.
