Funeral held for man shot by cop in NYC stairwell

NEW YORK (AP) — Friends and family members of a man shot by police in a New York City housing project stairwell have recited poems and said prayers at his funeral.

Akai (uh-KY') Gurley's loved ones, including his mother, stepfather and 2-year-old daughter, gathered Saturday in Brooklyn.

The 28-year-old Gurley was killed Nov. 20. Police say Officer Peter Liang was patrolling a pitch-dark stairwell when Gurley and his girlfriend opened a door into the stairway.

It's standard to train anyone in firearms safety to never have the finger within the trigger guard until ready to shoot. "Accident" my ass. That is negligence.

but there aren't going to be any actual consequences for his actions. A mistake that gets someone killed would result in a manslaughter conviction for anyone else. But the cop has a day off work to go to a class. "Lesson one, don't shoot people for no good reason. You all did great. Take a 3 hour break to rest your brains and we'll do lesson 2, which is 'If you shoot an innocent person, learn how to cover it up.'

and anger at the injustice perpetrated on this innocent young man and his young family and fiance.
