Citi Bike employees may join transit workers’ union

Source: NY Post

By Rebecca Harshbarger

The union that covers the city’s transit workers now covers bike share workers in Boston– and plans to expand to bike share programs in Washington, D.C. and Chicago soon.

The Transport Workers Union will now rep Boston’s Hubway bike share workers, which like New York’s Citi Bike workers, falls under the Portland-based company Alta Bicycle Share.

Alta’s incoming CEO Jay Walder clashed with the TWU when he ran the MTA from 2009 to 2011, before he left to take a private-sector job in Hong Kong.

Hundreds of station agents and other workers had lost their jobs under Walder during the financial crisis, as the MTA also made difficult service cuts.

Capital Bikeshare Employees Who Want To Unionize Seek Support

Sarah Anne Hughes in News on Nov 6, 2014 4:10 pm

Capital Bikeshare employees who want to unionize are seeking support ahead of a hearing with the National Labor Relations Board next week.

In a petition on Coworker.org, Ursula Sandstrom, a Capital Bikeshare bike checker, asks for Alta Bicycle Share, the company that operates D.C's bikeshare and was recently sold, and its new owner, REQX, to support the union voluntarily formed with Transport Workers Union Local 100.
