KSTP Owner Blames Social Media For #Pointergate Backlash

Source: Mediabistro

Stanley Hubbard, chairman and CEO of Hubbard Broadcasting, parent company of the station at the center of the #pointergate controversy, went on the defensive against detractors of the KSTP story that claimed the mayor and a get-out-the-vote volunteer were throwing gang signs in a picture.

Hubbard responded to the Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists after it called on the Minneapolis ABC affiliate to “disavow” the story, which came to be known as #pointergate.

In his letter, Hubbard stands by his station’s report and blames social media for fomenting controversy, at one point saying the internet lacks credibility.

... He added that those who criticized his station’s coverage, including what he called “serious news organizations,” only “followed the herd” in their attack on the story. “Rather than responsibly questioning law enforcement’s motivation in bringing this story forward, and digging deep into whether it truly represented a public safety issue,” he wrote. “They instead chose to simply ignore that which was reported, and go with the much easier and much more popular ‘silly gesture’ angle.

Earlier: ‘Gang sign’ story backfires on KSTP
http://blogs.mprnews.org/newscut/2014/11/gang-sign-story-backfires-on-kstp/

From the “Department of Are You Serious?” comes this from KSTP, which alleges that Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges knows a gang sign.

“A gang sign?” one commenter notes on the KSTP website, in a barrage of heavy criticism of the ‘story.’ “They’re pointing to each other. The man in the photo is doing good by encouraging people to participate in our democratic process. He did wrong in the past, served his time, is trying to do right now and has to deal with this BS??? We’ve all made mistakes before, and we all deserve a second chance. Shame on KSTP for trying to take his second chance away from him. Terrible job, KSTP – your credibility has taken a hit.”

- If not, then you should just go fuck yourself. How's that?

"white woman hugging a black man". Hubbard is guilty of excusing "Racist Code", a thing much more real than "Gang Signage".

"Public safety issue". They really think that a white woman being hugged by a black man is a "public safety issue".

They have long been a right wing propaganda machine and "uncover" scandals that turn to be much less. I rarely watch any news from twin cities stations and never on that channel.

9. Then we won't ever see any reference to the KSTP website or links on your newscasts, right?

Oh . . . you want to use technology to promote your brand, but not if it bites you in the ass.

ABC tacky news from coast to coast. Sleazy reporter, flash and trash news, everywhere I've lived in the US. Finally weaned myself from local newscasts -- infotainment.
