Austin police: More than 100 rounds fired

Source: AP-Excite

By JIM VERTUNO

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A gunman attempted to set the Mexican Consulate ablaze and fired more than 100 rounds at downtown buildings early Friday before he died, Austin authorities said.

Investigators were trying to determine the man's motives after he began shooting at the consulate, Austin police headquarters, the U.S. courthouse and other locations.

Some of the buildings are near the popular Sixth Street entertainment district, where bars close at 2 a.m., about the same time the shootings began Friday. Police Chief Art Acevedo noted that thousands of people are typically on the street at that time.

"Many, many rounds were fired in downtown Austin," Acevedo said. "With all the people on the streets, we're very fortunate. I give thanks that no one but the suspect is injured or deceased."

Hmmm, Texas, 2 am, bars close, heavily armed...

Maybe he thought he was helping 'seal the border'.

He had a ballistic vest on. He had IEDs. Propane bombs. This took planning. Thankfully Austin has a great police force and stopped him before he actually hurt someone.

I'm waiting for more information myself, but the assailant's name HAS been released. It's Larry Steve McQuilliams.

Just between you and me, this doesn't sound like some crazed jihadi from Iraq or Pakistan who forded across the (supposedly) unprotected US--Mexican border to attack Amurrica.

I personally suspect McQuilliams is some debit or other to the white race.

Is that the locations that he was firing at are not right near each other. Police headquarters is a mile from the Federal courthouse, and it's another 0.6 miles to the Mexican Consulate. Ii guess he started at the consulate office and worked his way east to the police headquarters. Glad I wasn't out there last night.

Was he firing from his car? He sure as heck wasn't on foot.
I heard some initial reports of automatic weapons fire. Is that holding up?

There is no other explanation how this guy could fire 100 rounds at a busy downtown and hit no one. God is not having this anymore.
